Visitors to the 49th annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival will experience the culture of Peru, one of the most ecologically and culturally diverse countries in the world. The Folklife Festival will take place Wednesday, June 24, through Sunday, June 28, and Wednesday, July 1, through Sunday, July 5. It will be located on the National Mall, between Third and Fourth streets S.W., adjacent to the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. 

Economy & Trade

The Peruvian economy is on the "upward curve," since the last April's GDP growth would have been higher than the one obtained the month before March (2.68%), Peru's Finance Minister Alonso Segura affirmed.
 

A total of 67,300 people went from underemployment to having a proper job in the last quarter (February, March and April), the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) affirmed. 
Thus, adequate employment grew by 2.3% during the last quarter in comparison to the same period last year, which means 70,000 people (4%) were taken out of underemployment.
 

Peru's country risk indicator, measured by the EMBIG Peru spread, fell in average terms in the week of May 5-12, remaining below the regional average, reported Saturday the Central Reserve Bank (BCR).
 

Peru's A3 stable sovereign rating is "solid without any doubt" and with a stable outlook thanks to its strong economic fundamentals and fiscal position, the Vice President of Moody's Sovereign Group Jaime Reusche affirmed. 
 

Infrastructure



The head of Peruvian investment authorities encouraged Korean companies to join the bidding for construction of the Lima Metro Line 3 project.
During a speech to the Asia Road Show at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul on May 14, Carlos Herrera, executive director of Peruvian investment and procurement agency ProInversion, praised Korean companies for their advanced technology and adaptation capabilities.



Spanish businessmen expressed interest in various infrastructure projects in Peru as part of a road show held by Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion) in three important cities of Spain.

The pause in Tia Maria project proposed by Southern Copper Corp on Friday will help clear up doubts and respond to concerns of Islay inhabitants in Arequipa region, Peru's Minister of Energy and Mines Rosa Maria Ortiz said.

Environment



At Global Big Day, a contest organized by eBird and the University of Cornell with the aim of promoting birdwatching at an international level, Peru managed to become the place, from which most bird species could be watched. 
The results put the Peru on the first position after some 1,177 species were registered, being followed by Brazil (1,099), Colombia (831) and the US (731). 

Social Inclusion


A new pilot scheme will see young Peruvians with Down Syndrome and autism employed in the housing sector.

The Minister of Housing, Construction and Sanitation, Milton von Hesse, announced today that the sector will employ differently abled young people, under agreements signed with the Peruvian Down Syndrome Society and the Ann Sullivan Centre of Peru.
 

Defense


Russia will deliver seven multi-purpose Mi-171Sh helicopters to Peru's air force by the end of the month, news agency RIA Novosti reported Monday, citing the deputy director of arms export agency Rosoboronexport, Sergei Ladygin. 
Diplomacy


With the aim of promoting bilateral ties, Peru and Estonia held the First Mechanism for Bilateral Policy Consultations in the presence of officials from Peru's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a high-ranking Estonian delegation.



Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang visits Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Chile from May 18 to May 26 with a coast-to-coast railway and trade talks on the agenda for his meetings with government and business leaders.
 




Archaeology



 A team of Peruvian archaeologists led by Walter Alva, who discovered the famous Lord of Sipan, is working to unveil the mysteries surrounding the origins of the Mochica culture, considered one of ancient Peru's most complex and developed cultures.

Archaeologists found a temple decorated with about 30 drawings and graffiti with different representations in recent weeks in the area known as Mata Indio, between the Za�a and Cayalti districts, in the northern region of Lambayeque.

 



The University of Wyoming of Laramie, United States wants to support the culture and knowledge provided by this fascinating evidence left behind by lost cultures of Peruvian history.
Just 12 kilometers from Cajamarca city, between Llacanora and Los Ba�os del Inca, sits the archaeological site of Callacpuma. Callacpuma is a site dating back to some of the oldest ages of occupation in Peruvian history and has preserved cave paintings of geometric, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures.

This emporium of Peruvian delights is our new favourite Eastern hotspot. The buzz Chef and award-winning cook book author Martin Morales opens the second outpost of his restaurant, Ceviche, in the historic Alexandra Trust Dining Rooms on Old Street. Tweaking the formula of his well-loved Soho venue, the Eastern branch has an almost brand new menu with an emphasis on healthy, sustainable and Peruvian superfood ingredients, inspired by Peru's Criollo, Chifa and Nikkei gastronomy.
 

Tourism



As the clouds lifted to reveal the early morning sun washing over the 'lost' Incan city of Machu Picchu in Peru, the last three days of walking were forgotten. Our group of 14 travellers from the US, Canada and the UK, had reached the Sun Gate and were approaching the end of the fabled Inca Trail.
 



With a record negotation cypher close to S/.120 million (about US$38 million), the 22nd Peru Travel Mart (PTM 2015) concluded on Sunday, the President of the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) Jorge Jochamowitz revealed.

Ines Melchor and three Kenyan citizens claimed the first, second and third positions at the (Maraton 42 K de Lima) Lima 42K Marathon, who took place on Sunday in along six districts of Lima. 


The mass exodus was the result of an extraordinary three-minute disciplinary blitz that saw Gabriel Costa (violent conduct), Pablo Miguez (second bookable offence), Marcos Miers and Christian Cueva (both dissent) all red-carded by referee Ramon Blanco for a smorgasbord of transgressions.

Just to cap it all off, coach Guillermo Sanguinetti was then also sent-off in the 90th minute for steaming onto the pitch to complain. The ironing is delicious.
