In March, copper production recovered thanks to a remarkable growth of 9% experienced in the said month, the Ministry of Energy and Mines announced.

Non-traditional export sector grew by 1.3% in the period comprised between April 2014 and March 2015 boosted by agro-industry, fishing, metallurgical and wood industries, Peru's Association of Exporters (ADEX) announced.

Peru's mineral production expanded in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period last year, Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) reported.

As Peru rapidly grows its economy, the country's Bolsa de Valores Lima exchange hopes to turn itself into a regional hub for international investors. To that end, the exchange has gone live with a new trading platform, built by the London Stock Exchange's MillenniumIT subsidiary.

The Commander of the Peruvian Navy (MGP), Admiral Edmundo Deville del Campo, received the first two General Dynamics Land Systems Canada (GDLS-C) LAV-II 8x8 armoured fighting vehicle at the GDLS-C facility in London, Ontario, on 6 May.
Both LAV-IIs will be delivered to Peru in late June and are part of a USD67 million order for 32 vehicles - including armoured personnel carrier and ambulance versions - that was first announced in July 2014. Deliveries are expected to end in mid-2016.
The MGP has named its LAV-IIs the 'Cayman', in honour of a Special Forces group deployed against Shining Path insurgents in the 1980s.
Infrastructure




Players in the hydrocarbons industry were pleased by the Peruvian government's plans to ease river transit through a series of major infrastructure projects. The first phase, the construction of new riparian ports in the cities of Yurimaguas, Pucallpa and Saramiriza, is well in hand, with the port in Yurimaguas already under construction.

The second phase of the government's plan is the $69-million Amazonian Waterways development, which consists of a dredging project aimed at enabling the Mara�on, Ucayali and Huallaga rivers, all tributaries of the Amazon, to be navigable 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Culture



Leading historians, archaeologists and conservation specialists from eight neighboring countries have joined their Peruvian counterparts in Cusco this week to draw up a South American heritage action plan 2015-2020.   The aim is to to define conservation strategies to be applied in each country and focus on certain priorities that will improve compliance with the World Heritage Convention, signed in 1972.
 

Gastronomy



In Rudyard Kipling's 1889 book From Sea to Sea - a collection of the author's letters and travel reports - he described Pisco as, "the highest and noblest product of the age," and "composed of cherubs' wings, the glory of tropical dawn, the red clouds of sunset, and fragments of lost masterpieces by dead poets". This white brandy of Peruvian origin is the result of distilling grapes from the arid Andean terrain into a high-proof spirit.

A visitors' center will be built shortly in the valley close to Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in order to accommodate domestic and international tourists willing to admire this archaeological monument while in this area.

Gnarly scenes have been unfolding at Peru's famed La Pampilla beach, where riot police have clashed with surfers fighting to stop a coastal highway project they say will ruin their world-class waves.

The beach, a magnet for international surfers that has been the training ground of several world champions, is a narrow stretch of rocky Pacific coast abutted by the Costa Verde highway.

Armed gangs, crooked police and rival backpacker groups regularly rob cocaine's beasts of burden on their three- to five-day journeys over mountain paths carved by their pre-Incan ancestors.
