Originally a working class holiday, Labour Day, May 1, is now celebrated around the world with Peruvians looking forward to relaxing with family and friends over the long weekend. The Labour Day long weekend is expected to draw out over 800,000 tourists-overwhelmingly Peruvian-and generate around S/. 244 million (US$78 million).

Economy & Trade

Excluding salary and wage bonuses from deductions and other measures taken by the Executive Power are accurate to improve business expectations with regard to Peru's economic growth, said the Manager of Economic Studies Department at Scotiabank, Guillermo Arbe.

More:

Peru's estimated public investment will be close to 6% of gross domestic product (GDP) over the next three years, exceeding that of Chile, Colombia, Brazil and Uruguay, reported the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).

Infrastructure

Exporters in Peru's Arequipa region are being urged to take advantage of the Interoceanic Highway to access the Brazilian market. At a recent workshop organised by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), minister Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez said the corridor offered cost and time advantages, helping to improve the competitiveness of Peruvian products in the Brazilian market.

The 2,600km highway links the Peruvian ports of San Juan de Marcona, Matarani and Ilo to Brazilian ports and cities in the Rio Branco Special Export Zone.

Between 2016 and 2018, infrastructure investments would grow by 5% in real terms, leading to account for 25.3% of 2018 GDP, Peru's Finance Ministry announced.

Sanitation

One of the world's driest cities is attempting to solve its water problems by reviving its ancient network of waterways. The Peruvian capital, Lima, is to restore pre-Inca aqueducts in the Andes mountains to service its population during the seven-month dry season.

Former prime minister and finance minister Pedro Pablo Kuczynski launched his presidential campaign for next year's general elections, to be held in April 2016.

Kuczynski, a well-known economist in Peru, will run for office for Peru's top post for a second time, aiming to brand himself as the "progressive" candidate in a field that is expected to be full of market-friendly, right-wing politicians.

Defense

Defense Minister, Jakke Valakivi, headed the ceremony, which commemorated the Anniversary of the Peruvian Army's Artillery Unit.

The event took place at the Artillery Academy located in Lima's Chorrillos district.

Literature

Four and a half years ago, I was fortunate to attend the Nobel Prize ceremonies in Stockholm when the Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa won the Prize for Literature. He had been my literary idol since I was a young child in Mexico.

On October 7 of 2010, before dawn, Mario woke up to a phone call from the secretary of the Swedish Academy congratulating him for his victory. Half asleep, he thought it was a prank. He was 74 at the time and believed his chance for winning the Nobel had passed.

Gastronomy

Adrian Bridge discovers the fresh flavours of Lima on a gastronomic tour of Lima like no other.

I have found "bliss" at my new favorite place for gelato and sorbet in Lima...BLU! Though only open since February 4th of this year,
BLUhas garnered justifiable buzz, popularity and has quickly become a darling of the Barranco community. I have made four visits since they opened (once in February, twice in March, and again this past Sunday).
Tourism

There are many terms you can use to describe the forest in deepest, darkest Peru. Generically it is part of the Amazonian rainforest, that vast expanse of land and water that extends into no fewer than nine South American countries and which breathes life (and oxygen) into the rest of the world. Within that, there's the primary and the secondary rainforests; the tropical and the subtropical rainforests; the highland and the lowland rainforests. And then there's my favourite, the cloud forest, that almost mystical, mist-infused, fern-filled zone between the mountains and the mass of greenery and fecundity below.

The Trade, Tourism and Investment Office of Peru in Dubai has confirmed its presence at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2015 for the third consecutive year with leading Peruvian travel specialists set to participate under its national pavilion.
Miscellaneous

Peru's National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that almost 16 million Peruvian citizens will celebrate the International Workers' Day across the country, half of which are male.

Earthquakes are a dime a dozen in Peru and can cause real damage, but it's when the little ones stop that you really have to worry.
As of the end of April, Peru has experienced 117 earthquakes-an average of almost one tremor a day-according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). Most of them, however, have gone unnoticed by the population.
