Peru's Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Juan Manuel Benites, is currently in Washington D.C. leading a delegation of ministerial officials and business leaders, who will meet with authorities of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to seek access of new agricultural products to the United States. 

Economy & Trade

The economic growth helps reduce poverty in a country, but redistributive policies are required to protect the most vulnerable sectors and are particularly necessary in the context of economic slowdown affecting the region, pointed out Economy and Finance Minister Alonso Segura.
 

Mining & Energy
The government has enacted a law that expands the 'Electricity Social Compensation Fund (Fose)' with the aim of benefiting 1,137,000 consumers residing in urban-rural areas and rural areas of the country, as well.

Opponents of Southern Copper Corp's proposed $1.4 billion Tia Maria mine in Peru expanded their month-long protests against the project on Wednesday with rallies in several towns in the region.

The Peruvian Citrus Growers Association (ProCitrus) introduced the advertising campaign: "Compartir" (Share), which aims at doubling the consumption of tangerines in the mid-term in Peru.
Fishing


The Ministry of Produce announced a fishing suspension of five days in a new area of the Peruvian ocean.

The Peruvian Maritime Institute (Imarpe) conducted a study of the said region and found a population of anchovy with 47% juveniles and therefore announced the suspension, according to Gestion.

Social Inclusion


Peru's Ministry of Health will allocate some S/.13.5 billion (about US$4.3 billion) to continue reducing chronic malnutrition in children, Minister Anibal Velasquez announced while urging regional governments to set higher goals and improve the quality of spending in this area.


The goals achieved by local farmers thanks to efforts undertaken by the Peruvian government have been assessed by members of the Swiss Cooperation in Peru (Cosude) group, who travelled to Quellopampa town located in the Apurimac region.
Fight Against Drugs


President Ollanta Humala claimed Tuesday that Peru is no longer the world's top producer of coca, the raw material used to make cocaine.

Humala said Peru had dropped its production level thanks to anti-drug strategies that include coca eradication programs and the seizure of chemical precursors used to produce coca paste.

Civil and military authorities took part in a ceremony marking 18 years of Chavin de Huantar Operation, which put an end to a hostage crisis caused by a terrorist group in Peru.

Award-winning chef Jos� Andr�s' China Chilcano restaurant in Washington, D.C., showcases Peruvian dishes influenced by Chinese and Japanese immigrants who moved to the South American country in the 19th century.

Andr�s, who helped popularize Spanish tapas in America, added another eatery to his 20 restaurants with Beefsteak, which focuses on vegetables.

The 45-year-old Spanish native spoke to Reuters about his passion for Peruvian cuisine and the charity work he does in Haiti.


Tourism



The 2016 Dakar Rally set to start in Peru is a great opportunity for the country to promote its tourist attractions, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Magali Silva informed.
According to Ms. Silva, the world will be focused on Peru "because it will host the departure point, which represents the Rally's most important moment."


An ambitious master plan for Machu Picchu was approved a few days ago that calls for a dramatic "reconceptualization" of the Inca Citadel, backed by a proposed $14.6 million makeover of its tourist infrastructure.

A striking feature of the 2015-2019 plan is how it frames and deals with the problem of the increasing waves of visitors who have flocked to the iconic ruins since the 2007 designation of Machu Picchu as a "New Wonder of the World."

The best Peruvian athletes were honored last night by with the Silver Hummingbird award.

 Athletes wore suits and formal dresses according to the gala ceremony, which took place at the Gran Teatro Municipal in Lima.


FIRS President Sabatino Aracu together with the President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee Jos� Qui�ones and the Regidor of the city of Lima Carlos Fernando Canales Anchorena have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 5 stages of the FIRS Roller World Cup - from 2016 to 2020 - and for the 2021 edition of the FIRS World Roller Games.

Peruvian film "Before Dawn" (La hora azul) directed by Evelyne Pegot-Ogier will be screened at the 31st Chicago Latino Film Festival, America's most important film festival featuring Latin American work on April 23, 2015.

Miscellaneous


More than three dozen animals rescued from Peruvian circuses and traffickers have a new home in a jungle island sanctuary.

The 39 monkeys, South American coatis and kinkajous - also known as honey bears - were flown from Lima to the northern city of Iquitos over the weekend on a Peruvian air force transport.

From there, the animals were loaded on boats and taken up the Rio Nanay to a private sanctuary at Pilpintuwasi, where they were released into large fenced enclosures.
