Finances

Peru kept borrowing costs unchanged for a second month in a bid to bolster the local currency amid increased volatility in financial and currency markets.

The board, led by President Julio Velarde, held the key rate at 3.25 percent, as forecast by 13 of 20 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Seven expected a cut to 3 percent. Policy makers cited growth rates below potential, slowing inflation and currency volatility as reasons for the pause.

The Republic of Peru has hired BBVA, Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley to arrange meetings with fixed-income investors ahead of a potential bond issue, according to market sources.

After selling US$450mn in 10-year bonds last year, Peru's Minsur may tap capital markets again to finance its projects in Peru and Brazil, CEO Juan Luis Kruger said.

The Lima-based company plans to complete a pre-feasibility study for the local Mina Justa copper project by year-end, Kruger said. He added that a pre-feasibility study for the B2 tailings treatment project at the San Rafael mine is scheduled for completion by the third quarter and work will begin on a feasibility study in the fourth quarter.

Unicef's Director and Senior Adviser on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Nicholas Alipui, highlighted achievements and progress made by Peru's Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion - Midis in three years of administration.

The social and productive programs, promoted by the government, aim at reducing the gaps of inequality and bringing more development opportunities to poverty and extreme poverty-stricken areas, said First Lady Nadine Heredia today.

IN THE verbose annals of Latin American integration, the declaration of Lima of April 2011 stands out for its rare combination of brevity and impact. In less than three pages, the presidents of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru agreed to launch the Pacific Alliance. Its aims were to promote "deep integration" of economies through the free movement of goods, services, capital and labour, and to strengthen ties with the world, and the Asia-Pacific region in particular.

Gastronomy

I was eagerly anticipating the day of our visit to El Hijo de Olaya. I had heard mostly positive feedback about this newly opened (October 2014) ceviche bar/restaurant and was eager to see what all the "buzz" was about. Quite frankly I was a bit surprised that someone did not capitalize on the popularity of ceviche sooner.

Tourism

My first visit to Peru changed my life. I went to Machu Picchu in 1969, saw this overgrown path leading into the jungle and wondered where it would take me. It was the end section of the now-famous Inca Trail, and on my next visit it was the thrill of walking the full length of it that led my husband and me to write our first guidebook (and in the process give birth to Bradt Travel Guides in 1974). Eight editions of that book followed, fuelled by my annual trips to South America as a trekking and tour leader. I want to return one last time. Not to Cusco and Machu Picchu, but to my favourite mountain range, the Cordillera Blanca, and to make my first visit to the 'Machu Picchu of the north' - Kuelap in the Chachapoyas region.

Film

revealing documentary about the dirty side of gold shares what many Peruvians are all but too familiar with.

Journalism

Like most tabloids, Trome lives off celebrity scandal and entertainment news. It runs photographs of scantily clad women, but unlike most tabloids, it lacks gory pictures or sensational crime stories on the cover; those are sent to the inside pages. It devotes entire sections to beauty and health tips for women, love and sex horoscopes, gossip columns and educational material for schoolchildren.

This sassy concoction has made Trome a "family tabloid" and the best-selling newspaper not only in Peru but also in the Spanish-speaking world. With 734,000 copies sold daily, Trome sells more than Peru's El Comercio (90,000), Argentina'sClarn (280,000), Spain's El Pas (325,000) or Colombia's El Tiempo (400,000).

Sports

Copa Sudamericana champions River Plate have been held to a 1-1 draw at Peruvian outfit Juan Aurich in Copa Libertadores Group 6.
