The economic growth of Peru has been inclusive because it has benefited the poor more than other groups, which suggests the pace of poverty reduction in Peru has been among the highest in the region, pointed out the Senior Director of the Poverty Reduction Unit at the World Bank Group, Ana Revenga.

Peru's commodities-powered economy will likely grow at 4.2 percent in 2015, the economy ministry said on Wednesday, a rate that is slower than previously forecast.

The economy ministry confirmed the new working forecast a day after the newspaper El Comercio reported that Fernando Figueroa, the government's director of macroeconomic forecasts, gave the new forecast at an event at the Peruvian-Nordic Chamber of Commerce.



Investment bank Credit Suisse raised the projection of growth of Peru for 2016 from 5.4% to 5.6%. It is due infrastructure projects awarded by the government last year.

Those are intended to boost the economic activity throughout 2016.


Mining, fishing and public investment will boost Peru's GDP this year by leading to reach an average growth of 4%, estimated Emilio Zuņiga, Vice President of Latin Pacific Capital investment bank. 



The head of Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Magali Silva, will open today the Peru Pavilion Expocomer 2015 with the participation of more than 120 Peruvian businessmen gathered in Panama City.

Agriculture



Exports of cocoa and derivatives grew by 57.4% in 2014 after registering an amount of US$247.4 million, thanks to Europe's higher demand, mainly that of the Netherlands and Belgium, informed Adex (Peruvian Association of Exporters). 



This year, Peru is projected to produce over 4.5 million tons of potatoes.
Although its exact origin is unknown, the potato is strongly tied to Peru. The Spanish word papa itself is originally "tuber" in Quechua and the oldest archeological findings were made in the area of Lake Titicaca. Currently, there are more than 3,800 varieties of potatoes found in Peru that differ in size, color, shape, texture and taste. The Peruvian market has adapted and profited greatly from the potato, and each potato variety has a unique place in the Peruvian cuisine.
Social Inclusion


Peruvian Government today signed a historic agreement with the Apus (Chiefs) of four river basins in Loreto region, through which it will contribute S/.100 million (about US$32.2 million) to support local communities in there, informed Peru's Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM). 



Peru's social programs are "on the right track" and have led to reducing poverty in the country because those have a "productive investment" component, the Director of the Poverty Reduction Unit at the World Bank Group Ana Revega affirmed. 

Telecom


Peru's national fibre-optic backbone network projects will see high-speed internet services rolled out to 6,411 locations via 31,716km of fibre, benefiting 5.1 million citizens, minister of transport and communications Jose Gallardo Ku has confirmed. 21 deployment programmes are scheduled to be tendered over the next two years, with a total investment of USD1.16 billion, of which USD628.4 million will be spent on the access network whilst a further USD534.8 million will go towards the transport network. 

Fight Against Drugs


The government of President Ollanta Humala said on Tuesday it might back a bill that would lift a 14-year-old ban on shooting down aircraft suspected of carrying drugs, even though the U.S. government opposes the practice.

The legislation should garner enough votes to pass Congress as early as this week.

Gender Issues


A congressional committee on Tuesday voted down a bill that would have allowed civil unions between same-sex couples, after a leading Catholic bishop  lashed out at the gay lawmaker who drafted the legislation with a homophobic diatribe.

After a three-hour debate, seven members of the Congressional Justice and Human Rights Committee voted against the legislation; four voted in favor and two abstained, according to RPP Noticias.


 

Diplomacy



Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Allan Wagner, stressed Ollanta Humala's position on Chile's espionage actions against Peru and ruled out the political use of this diplomatic crisis. 

 




Gastronomy


 

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced China has selected Peru as the top gastronomic destination, according to Gestion.

Mincetur announced that Peru was chosen as Best Gastronomic Destination by the renowned Chinese magazine, Top Travel of China.

Tourism



The Cave of Toquepala is located in Tacna, in the southern region of Peru. It is ten meters deep, has a width of five meters and a height of three meters. On its walls were discovered cave painting depicting various hunting scenes, representing hunters rounding up a group of guanacos.

Racing and Gustavo Bou in particular, had found the Copa Libertadores rather simple before last night. Two wins out of two and Bou already had six goals (more than last year's top scorer after the entire tournament) but Peruvian side, Sporting Cristal provided a wake up call for Diego Cocca's side, claiming a somewhat surprising 2-1 win in Avellaneda. 

 

Miscellaneous


Teresa de Jesus Tello never thought she would be incarcerated in a Peruvian prison at age 82.

She became one of 2,500 inmates over age 60 in the South American country's prisons. Most of the elderly women behind bars are there for drug trafficking.

 



The Management of Culture of the Municipality of Lima has yet to provide cultural policies and an agenda since it began operating on Jan. 1, according to El Comercio.

The culture department is "reshaping" their budget and has not yet established what amount will be allocated to the culture sector of Lima. They told El Comercio that they are conducting a cost-benefit analysis claiming that the former budget "only benefited 52,000 limeņos."
