U.S. President Barack Obama is engaged in strengthening the strategic alliance with Peru, today noted the Peruvian Ambassador to Washington, Luis Miguel Castilla, who has recently handed over his credentials to the White House.

Economy & Trade


The Peruvian economy will boost in the third quarter of 2015 reach a 2.5% expansion. 
The growth rate is more than double the rate registered in the least month of 2014 (1%), forecasted the Maximixe Consulting.
 



Domestic investment in Peru accounted for 28.9% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) in the fourth quarter of 2014, mainly due to the dynamism of the private capital, informed Peru's Central Reserve Bank (BCR).
 



Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Magali Silva, estimated the services exports would triple from US$5.814 billion (2014) to US$18.00 billion (2025) after the implementation of the National Strategic Exports Plan (PENX).
 



Over 100 Peruvian entrepreneurs, including exporters and importers, will participate in the international fair known as "Expocomer 2015," to be held in Panama in March 11-14, as informed by Marcelino Aviles, Foreign Service Officer at Panama's Embassy in Lima.

Peru's Arequipa region is the front-runner in terms of potential locations for a petrochemical complex in the south of the country, according to congressional president Ana Mar�a Sol�rzano.

Sol�rzano made the statement after meeting with cabinet chief Ana Jara, energy and mines minister Rosa Mar�a Ortiz, Arequipa region head Yamila Osorio and other lawmakers, a statement issued by congress said. 

Agriculture

 



Peruvian quinoa exports registered an exponential growth during the last two years, expanding six times its rate, as informed by the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL). 



In the last five years, the Competitiveness Compensation Programs (Agroideas) has allocated US$326 million, in order to finance business plans of small and medium-sized farmers at a national level, The Agriculture Ministry informed.


Three more countries have blocked imports of Canadian beef or beef products, following Canada's discovery of mad cow disease earlier this month, its first in four years.

Taiwan, Peru and Belarus have imposed trade restrictions, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said on Monday in an update on its website. The CFIA had earlier reported that South Korea had banned Canadian beef and Indonesia banned non-edible byproducts from Canada.


Fishing


The year 2015 will be the one of the Peruvian fishing sector's recovery due to the disappearance of the effects posed by the "El Ni�o" phenomenon, affirmed The Head of the Ministry of Production (Produce), Piero Ghezzi.
The climatic phenomenon harshly affected the domestic fishing activity in 2014.
Diplomacy


The Ministers of Defense, Pedro Cateriano, and Foreign Relations, Gonzalo Gutierrez, are in Congress today to answer questions from the Congress' permanent committee on the alleged sale of military information to Chile by three Navy warrant officers.


The Foreign Affairs Minister, Gonzalo Gutierrez said on Sunday night there are "clear and credible evidences" of Chile espionage against Peru.
Therefore, he reiterated Peru waits for a "precise and clear" response from Chile, which includes an internal investigation about this act.


Peru and Uruguay will subscribe an agreement a Memorandum of Understanding needed to establish a joint Peace Corps Force, which will be present in the United States Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). 


Israel Ambassador in Peru, Ehud Mosh� Eitam, expressed the interest of Israeli companies in raising its investments in Peru.
Those are particularly attracted by Lambayeque, after the Olmos project started operating during the last quarter of 2014.
Israel's contribution would be linked to a future technological transference required for the efficient use of water, and to investments in projects and education.
 




Archaeology



Hair on 2,000-year-old mummies has helped reveal what Paracas people in Peru ate in the weeks before their death.

A team of archaeologists used the remarkably well-preserved strands to study the diets of 14 individuals unearthed at the Paracas Necropolis of Wari Kayan. 

During the last months of their lives, they appear to have eaten primarily fish and plants, such as corn and beans.

Peruvian Nobel Literature laureate Mario Vargas Llosa will arrive in Arequipa, Peru next month to donate 2,000 books from his personal collection to the Arequipa's regional library bearing his name.

An Anadolu Agency photojournalist inPeru has won an "Award of Excellence" at the Pictures of the Year International Competition, one of the world's most prominent photo contests.

The award-winning collection of pictures entitled "Refuge of the Soul" was taken by Sebastian Castaneda and show pilgrims visiting the Captive Christ Sanctuary in Ayabaca, Peru.

The stunning images show the trip to the Senor Cautivo de Ayabaca sanctuary, believed to have witnessed miracles or healing. 

Tourism


 

US Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow issued the following statement Tuesday applauding Peru's inclusion in US Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Global Entry program, making it the first South American country to participate in the program:

"As the newest partner in Global Entry, Peru joins the growing number of U.S. allied nations that see the clear advantages of a better travel experience to the United States.

"Pre-approved, low-risk visitors from Peru will soon enjoy secure, hassle-free travel to America." 



New equipment required for the validation of electronic passports and other biometric identification documents was installed at the migratory checkpoints of the Jorge Chavez International Airport.

Peru may require GPS devices in boats to fight illegal logging in Amazon

 

Peru's permanent Commission for the Fight against Illegal Logging is considering installing GPS devices on river boats in the Amazon basin in order to halt the transport of lumber from illegal logging, High Commissioner Cesar Fourment said.
