A few days left to celebrate its 43 anniversary, Peru's National Pacaya Samiria Reserve has been recognized as one of the '10 Best Reader's Choice' in the Wildlife category.

 The Peruvian reserve occupied position number 2 in the ranking by the prestigious American daily newspaper USA Today.
Economy & Trade


Despite the hard international context ahead for 2015, Peru will be one of the countries to lead growth in the region, assured today Finance Minister, Alonso Segura.
 



Peru's economy will be hit by a "worrisome" drop in the price of copper but should still expand by more than 4 percent this year, Finance Minister Alonso Segura said.

The official growth target for 2015 is 4.8 percent, double last year's estimated expansion of 2.4 percent.



In 2014 some 6,200 Peruvian Small and Mid-sized enterprises (PYMES) reached international markets, estimated today The Peruvian Association of Exporters (ADEX).
 



The Peruvian government plans to sell sovereign bonds via trading platform Euroclear Group to help financeinfrastructure investments, a senior official said, according to state news agency Andina.

The government signed an MOU with Euroclear, a deal that will provide greater liquidity for the bonds and reduce financing costs by lowering spreads, finance minister Alonso Segura said.

Peru's Minister of Energy and Mines, Eleodoro Mayorga, said Peru can become South Pacific's largest petrochemical producer if dialogue is established with the private sector, producers and drivers in order to complete petrochemical stages successfully. 



Peru's total installed power generation capacity went from 6,016 Mw to 11,284 Mw between 2004 and 2014, which represents a 88% increase, with an average annual rate of 6.5% for this period, informed the General Directorate of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mines. 



The national electricity consumption, including the energy consumed by users and that generated for own use, increased one percent in 2014 over the previous year, informed the General Directorate of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM). 



One person was killed and at least eight were injured in protests in a Peruvian jungle town against natural gas exploration by Argentine energy company Pluspetrol, the government said on Wednesday. 

Agriculture



Fresh grapes exports amounted US$632 million during 2014, representing a 43% growth compared to 2013, confirmed the Center of Foreign Trade (CCEX) of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).

Peru's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gonzalo Guti�rrez, today participated in a ministerial meeting with local and regional authorities on the sidelines of the program "National Government and Regional Government Together towards Development of Madre de Dios."



The Government of Peru has appointed Carlos Manuel Alfredo Velasco Mendiola, current Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Morocco, to serve concurrently as envoy to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

For a friend's birthday recently, we decided to head to Antigua Taberna Queirolo bar, one of Lima's oldest and culturally significantbodegas. The building, which hails from the 1870s and has been restored, is still lined with old wood and plastered with faded black-and-white photos that depict Lima from years long gone.

Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Magali Silva, disclosed the Peruvian government through her ministry will invest S/.11 million (over US$3.5 million) thru July 2016 in projects that will promote tourism and foreign trade in Madre de Dios. 

Culture



The Ministry of Culture decided to list the Archaeological Landscape of Huanchosmarca as National Cultural Heritage of Peru, according to a deputy ministerial resolution published in the official gazette El Peruano.
 



The Navidad en Honor al Ni�o Lachocc, a la Virgen de la Natividad y al Ni�o Nativo (Christmas in Honor of Lachocc Child Jesus, Nativity Virgin and Native Child) has been recognized as a National Cultural Heritage as it is a unique manifestation and regional tradition expression kept alive in the memory of people and enriched over the time.
Philanthropy



Giving back is in Cindy Crawford's blood-as a kid, she lost her brother to leukemia and has been volunteering in one way or another ever since. Her most recent effort has been captured in a moving documentary,Hospital in the Sky, which premiered in New York City last week. In it, the Omega ambassador visits Peru with leading global NGO Orbis to raise awareness of and help eliminate avoidable blindness.

Miscellaneous


 

ADI (Animal Defenders International) are a successful group who have been busy persuading the Peruvian 2012 laws on circus animals to come into effect, using a mission title, Operation Spirit of Freedom. In their temporary rescue centre outside Lima, Pepe is a spider monkey, probably Ateles chamek. He was released following 8 years of imprisonment, chained in a circus. Along with 21 lions and an equal number of other species of monkeys , a coati mundi, a baboon and several horses, vets try and rehabilitate their patients before relocating them to a suitable permanent home such as the Colorado sanctuary to which the lions will make their way. The spider monkey, very endangered like all eight of his genus, proved a great pet, but needed a mate to secure a viable tiny colony for his release.



An unidentified flying object was spotted and recorded in video footage today in Miraflores, after a camera man noticed a purple object floating in the distance.

UFO or "objetos voladores no identificados" (OVNI) has captured the attention of thousand of Peruvians today, after Congressman Renzo Reggiardo and his film crew captured footage of a purple floating object in the Lima sky.
