Peruvians in the USA

Ariana Fernandez and her magnetometer have a terrific view of Peru.

Admittedly, it's no postcard image. Fernandez, a senior majoring in archaeological studies, goes in more for soil samples than scenic vistas. Yet with her bits of burnt earth and some world-class technology, she sees South America's past, present, and geophysical future in stunning detail.

"I'm helping people learn more about past societies, while fulfilling the science-y part of my brain," Fernandez said, clutching a handful of soil sample cubes on the way to the lab. "What I didn't expect was that I'd be creating a magnetic dating curve for all of Peru."

A tear came to the President Obama's eye Wednesday when Maria Praeli told him about her mother, an undocumented resident of Connecticut who had to watch her own mother's funeral on an iPad because if she had returned home to Peru, she would not have been allowed back into the U.S.

"She hugged the iPad as if she was hugging her mother," Praeli said, recounting the story later Wednesday.

Gastronomy

Lovers of the Peruvian white brandy made from muscat grapes can raise their Pisco Sour on February 7 to celebrate World Pisco Sour Day.

By way of background since many people in the U.S. are not familiar with the brandy produced in winemaking regions of Peru and Chile, the Pisco Sour cocktail is said to have originated by Victor Vaughen Morris, an American bartender working in Cerro de Pasco, a city in central Peru. In 1916, he opened Morris' Bar in Lima and it quickly became popular with the Peruvian upper class and visitors. The cocktail underwent many changes until Mario Brigit, a Peruvian bartender working at Morris' created the modern Peruvian recipe in the late 1920's by adding Angostura bitters and egg whites.

Tourism

In a country of dramatic landscapes; swathes of rainforest, the towering Andes and some of the highest sand dunes in the world, it is no surprise that for most travellers the capital city Lima is simply a stop-off, overlooked for its Andean or Amazonian counterparts.

Science

A handful of roughly 36-million-year-old fossil teeth unearthed in Peru have put new bite into the idea that ancient African monkeylike primates somehow reached South America and sparked the evolution of New World monkeys. Although scientists previously suspected that African animals got the primate ball rolling in the Americas, the Peruvian finds provide the first fossil backup for the scenario.

After 2001, when it joined the world economy through the World Trade Organisation (WTO), China quickly began purchasing and investing in Latin American primary commodities.
Today, China is the number one trading partner for some of the region's largest economies, and China's development banks pour more money into the region than the World Bank or the Inter-American Development Bank.
