At a time when the collapse of commodity prices is roiling countries from Venezuela to Russia, Peru is showing that it's one of the few developing nations positioned to weather the plunge. After running budget surpluses for three straight years and stockpiling $8.6 billion in a rainy-day fund, Peru has cut taxes, boosted spending and chopped interest rates to shore up economic growth. President Ollanta Humala has also attracted investment into agricultural and energy projects to reduce Peru's dependence on mining, which accounts for half of its export revenue.

Peru, the world's third largest copper, zinc and tin producer and also an exporter of natural gas, fishmeal and coffee, will grow less than originally forecast this year due to slumping commodities prices, finance minister Alonso Segura said Thursday.
GDP growth will probably be closer to the central bank's forecast of 4.8% for 2015, down from the finance ministry's earlier prediction of 5-5.5% growth, Segura said. The economy expanded 2.4% last year compared with 5.1% in 2013, he said.

Peru central bank President Julio Velarde opened the door to a fifth interest rate cut since 2013 as Finance Minister Alonso Segura reduced his forecast for economic growth this year.
Should inflation slow as forecast, the bank has room to ease monetary policy "though not that much because consumption remains vigorous," Velarde said Thursday at the Bloomberg Peru Summit 2015 in Lima.

"Last year, we exported 92% of what we produced to Europe, but this year we are reducing our volume of shipments to European destinations to 75% because we are afraid of what might happen to the Euro," said Aingeru Garca, manager of APPBOSA.
Given the significant devaluation of the Euro and discontent on the part of the company with the FLO (Fairtrade Labelling Organization), APPBOSA has decided to diversify its customer base.
The year 2015 has started on a very positive note for APPBOSA. "We've had a really good start, with a record production and exporting between 19 and 20 containers per week; in 2015, we hope to reach 850,000 boxes," affirms Aingeru, who mentions that the annual production record is 785,000 boxes, achieved in 2012, with production dropping to 650,000 boxes in 2013 due to pest issues.
