Gastronomy

Stock up on patience before you go online to book a table at China Chilcano, the vibrant new restaurant combining Chinese, Japanese and Peruvian accents from Jos Andrs, a chef who seems determined to tackle every cuisine on the planet before he turns in his white jacket. Unless you like to eat dinner at 4 in the afternoon or 10 at night, landing a table anytime soon in the Penn Quarter arrival - which follows his Spanish, Mexican, Middle Eastern and modernist kitchens in the neighborhood - is as unlikely as an unlocked front door at the White House.

Sports

The cold Pacific waters massage my dusty feet as I survey the perfectly peeling break just 60 feet in front of me.

After walking nearly a mile barefoot over a baking, rocky desert, the sensory release - and relief - coming from my suffering soles is extreme.

Surfers are a hardy bunch and will put up with all kinds of suffering to catch a wave or two. But it's not usually like this.

For most, wipeouts, sunburn, sharp coral, and even the risk of a hungry shark mistaking them for a juicy seal, are all taken as given.

Then there's the paddling. That's how surfers reach the break, lying face down on their boards, moving through the water front-crawl style.

Miscellaneous

When I closed up my office and started to work from home, I discovered a whole world operating outside my gate that I rarely came across otherwise. There are the monthly cries by the old knife sharpener and his foot-powered whetting stone, the sounds every June and July of school students practicing on their trumpets for the local Independence Day parade, the vendor with a colorful array of brooms and mops that stand tall in his tricycle cart, and the rag and bone man on his motor-powered tricycle, offering to buy your old fridge, empty bottles, or used clothing.

But the greatest impact has come from four women who call at my gate.
