Peru's President Ollanta Humala attended today a commemorating ceremony marking the first year of territory incorporation to national maritime domain.

The event was held at the Ilo sea. Ilo is a port located in the Moquegua region.
Economy & Trade


Peru's Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion) will take part in the "Business Opportunities in Peru for Mexican Enterprises" event, which takes place today in Mexico D.F.
 



According to Carmen Moreno, International Labour Organization's Director for Andean countries, Peru has been implementing good policies to boost job creation for the youth.
 

Infrastructure


Peru's government plans to invest 4.17bn soles (US$1.4bn) this year in infrastructure and social projects in Ayacucho region, including roads, irrigation, hospitals and schools, President Ollanta Humala said.


Peru's government plans to invest US$8.4bn soles (US$2.8bn) in hospital infrastructure projects over the next three years, according to a health ministry statement.

Potable water and sewerage projects, meanwhile, are underway in Lima and the Amazon jungle, as the government of President Ollanta Humala boosts spending on infrastructure.

Fishery



Anchovy and fish meal exports are expected to grow 12% in 2015 according to estimates by Scotiabank.

The bank estimates that in the negative year of 2014, production of fish meal fell 39% and the value of the exports fell 4% with it.

Considering that the climate will be preferable for the fish, and the juvenile anchovy were left to multiply, experts are predicting an increase of approximately 12% according to Gestion.

Agriculture



The Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) confirmed Peru is the main quinoa producer and exporter in the world, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and information from the top independent commercial information agencies.
Education


With the support of Unesco, the Peruvian Education Ministry (Minedu) has initiated the second phase of the Teacher Update Training Program intended to strengthen skills of basic education teachers in every public education institution.
Public Health

 



Peru's Health Ministry will allocate S/.100 million (about US$ 33.2 million) to assist indigenous population this year through the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) across San Martin, Loreto, Ucayali and Amazonas regions.
 

Diplomacy


Elimination of the Schengen visa would bring an explosion of investment between the regions among other benefits.

Peru and the EU are continuing the necessary preparations to eliminate the Schengen visa to facilitate the travel of Peruvians into the European Union.

The EU ambassador in Peru announced that the two regions will be moving forward in the coming two months to discuss and negotiate technical issues to remove the visa process for Peruvians.

 




Archaeology



A study by the University of Florida published in the International Journal of Paleopathology claims to have discovered the first ever evidence for ancient bone surgery found in Peru.

Dr. J Maria Toyne details that two skeletons (dated 800-1535 CE) from the pre-Colombian site of Kuelap demonstrate pathology similar to trepanation. Trepanation is the surgical practice of drilling holes into bones and is the oldest example of surgical intervention.

Gastronomy



According to an entrepreneurial British website, Peruvian cuisine is among the best choices for business trends this year.

Topping the list of 14 business ideas with Peruvian cuisine were other "erupting" trends such as 3D printing and quirky cafes.

Tourism



UNESCO has named another one of Peru's unique traditions as a piece of the country's intangible cultural heritage. Held every year in February, Puno's Feast Day of the Virgin of Candlemas (La fiesta de la virgen de la candelaria) is everything you would expect from a Peruvian celebration - dancing, colorful costumes, music, food, and of course, alcohol.  



LAN Peru announced it will increase flights to and from New York this April.

Starting April 4, LAN is adding a second round of flights two days a week to its Lima-New York route to provide higher frequency of flights and alternatives for connecting passengers.

Culture



In a historical move, Greenpeace has provided Peru with names of four of its activists involved in theNazca Lines protest.
Sports


Peruvian Olympic Committee president Jose Quinones tells Around the Rings that, despite offering his resignation earlier this month, he expects to remain in charge.
On Friday, the NOC will hold a general assembly in Lima to consider his resignation. A meeting of the Executive Committee rejected his resignation on Jan. 7. 

Miscellaneous


The former adviser is currently being investigated for his involvement in a corruption chain in his native Peru.
The former adviser, Martin Belaunde Lossio, is being held in the National Refugee Commission after being arrested by Bolivian authorities at the request of the government of Peru.
