Exports of enterprises participating in Peru's "Exporting Route" program grew by 5% in 2014, reaching the US$920 million, informed Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Magali Silva.

The head of this portfolio, indicated last year 1,912 micro, small and medium enterprises from all across the country, were benefited through assistance and training programs offered by Sierra Exportadora program.
The number of companies, which benefited from this program in 20 regions, grew by 44% in 2014, Silva explained.
Economy & Trade


The Board of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, or BCR, approved to lower the monetary policy interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.25% in annual terms.
 



The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (Inei) today said the Peruvian economy expanded 0.31% in November 2014, closing out 64 months of continuous growth.

The regional governments and the Executive Branch will become strategic partner by promoting investments in the country, affirmed the governors of Cusco, Tacna and Madre de Dios regions.

Additionally, they committed to also focus on social investment and to promote private investments required to diversify the works in favor of Peru.
 

Infrastructure



The World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved US$55 million in new financing today for a project that will extend the benefits of rehabilitating water and sewage networks to more than 239,000 low income residents in Northern Lima.

"This new financing builds on the results of the first stage of the project carried out in Northern Lima," said Marco Vargas Medina, General Manager of SEDAPAL. "Improving the coverage and the quality of the sewage system and bringing running water to the most vulnerable population is the challenge we assumed previously; our commitment is to achieve good results in the coming years."



Peruvian President Ollanta Humala took part in the opening ceremony of expansion works completed at drinking water, sewage and wastewater treatment networks in the Viru province in La Libertad.
Environment



Authorities a from Peru and Bolivia has met in La Paz in order to assess the development of the Integrated Water Resources Management in the Titicaca-Desaguadero-Poopo-Salar de Coipasa (TDPS) System.
According to Peru's Environment Ministry (Minam), the execution of this project will be co-financed by the two countries and the Global Environment Fund (GEF).


The late Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai has been honoured posthumously in Peru for her efforts in conserving the environment. Peru has named its city park after Prof Maathai for her enthusiasm in protecting the environment. The park in Lima was officially commissioned late last month to commemorate the Nobel laureate and her works. The ceremony coincided with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that was held in Lima.
Forestry


The regulations to be adopted under the new Forestry and Wildlife Law N. 29763 will be approved in early March, marking a turning point in the management of resources in forest zones inhabited by 52 indigenous communities that are currently final design of the law through a prior consultation mechanism.


The government is to launch a full-out strategy to curb illegal logging, blamed for serious environmental damage and high social costs, according to the head of a new office in charge of the issue.

Cesar Fourment, the High Commissioner for the Fight Against Illegal Logging, said the government plans to launch multiple strategies, state news agency Andina reported.

Politics


Peru's Prime Minister, Ana Jara, ruled out the possibility that the National Intelligence Directorate (DINI) has been involved in the alleged espionage activities or practice of spying on politicians and former government officials.



Thousands of young Peruvians have marched through central Lima, chanting: "We don't want to be cheap, exploited manpower", in the latest protest against a controversial labour law which demonstrators claim robs them of basic rights, but which the government argues will boost employment.

Defence



The Peruvian Air Force (Fuerza A�rea del Per� - FAP) has signed for a further two Alenia Aermacchi C-27J Spartan tactical airlifters under a USD100 million deal announced on 15 January.

The deal, which was signed on 31 December 2014, includes spares and support and will see deliveries take place in 2016 and 2017.



Peru's Chief of Joint Armed Forces, Admiral Jorge Moscoso Flores, headed the farewell ceremony held for Peru's 24th UN Blue Berets contingent prior its departure to Haiti.
The group will join the UN peacekeeping operations undertaken the Antillean country. 
Diplomacy



French president, Fran�ois Hollande, confirmed his next visit to Peru. It will take place in the coming weeks.




Alabama Governor Robert Bentley and Peru's Ambassador to the United States, Harold Forsyth, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), that will strengthen economic ties and promote cooperation between the state and the South American country.

The budget approved for financing this year's creation of the infrastructure work's technical dossier, for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, will amount S/. 5 million (about US$1.71 million), said today Saul Barrera, the President of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD).
