Peru's Finance Minister Alonso Segura today announced the government, through Peru's Private Investment Promotion Agency (Proinversion), has approved 22 co-financed private initiatives that will attract investments worth S/.20.8 billion (over US$6.9 billion).

Economy & Trade

Peru's government will help provide financing for $7 billion of private infrastructure projects to boost investment after economic growth sagged last year.

The Andean nation approved requests from companies to partially finance 22 projects in industries including transportation, health care and education, Finance Minister Alonso Segura told Radio Programas. Peru will award the contracts to design, build and operate the infrastructure over the next 18 months, he said. He didn't specify what percentage of projects the government would support financially.

The budget allocated to Peru's Eastern Macroregion for 2014 public infrastructure investment projects amounted to S/. 3.1 billion (about US$1 billion), of which its government executed 81% according to Perucamaras estimates.

Efforts by Peru's central bank to reduce foreign currency reserve requirements in an effort to strengthen the levels of local currency-denominated loans will not meaningfully boost the credit profiles of Peru's banks, says Fitch Ratings.

Mining & Energy

The mining megaprojects such as Constancia (Cusco) and the extension of Cerro Verde (Arequipa) will start producing commercially this year, and it is expected those will boost the mining GDP, stated the Deputy Minister of Mines, Guillermo Shinno.

In the mountains of rural Peru, solar power organizations are finding footholds. Their experiences may illuminate the challenges of electrifying remote areas. The Clean Energy Solutions Center hosted a webinar on Nov. 18 in which solar organizations in rural Peru described their practices.

Poverty & Social Inclusion

Reducing extreme poverty (4.7%) and general poverty (23.5%) in Peru has been the outcome of a "growth with inclusion policy" implemented by the government of President Ollanta Humala, affirmed today the alternative speaker of the ruling party, Gana Peru, Julia Teves.

Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) minister, Paola Bustamante, said today extreme poverty in Peru was reduced to 4.7%, and general poverty to 23.5%. It means the goals have been accomplished and the government is "working in order to continue to decrease" both indicators.

Banking Association Asbanc said Peru ranks first out of 55 countries for having the best enabling environment for financial inclusion, according to the report Global Microscope 2014: The Enabling Environment for Financial Inclusion.

Gastronomy

From the people behind the neighbouring tapas restaurant, Bravas and the original invtesor of Hakkasan and Yauatcha, Bal Thind - Amaru is the brainchild of some big players in the restaurant world.

It doesn't disappoint. Food is all artfully prepared in the tiny five-table space, tucked into an alcove at St Katherine's Docks. And to top it off, the place has only been open a week and there is already a steady stream of trade coming in and out of its doors.

Tourism

Peruvian officials are planning to create a historical site to rival that of Machu Picchu, in the form of one of its best kept secrets - the Chachapoyas ruins of the northern "cloud people".

While Machu Picchu has been on the tourist map for virtually every visitor to Peru, Chachapoya is largely unexplored by most foreigners, save some adventurous backpackers. But the government plans to change that and ease traffic off its crown jewel of Machu Picchu - which has been at risk from increased footfall - and increase traffic to the northern Amazonas region of the country.

Culture

UNESCO has named another one of Peru's unique traditions as a piece of the country's intangible cultural heritage. Held every year in February, Puno's Feast Day of the Virgin of Candlemas (La fiesta de la virgen de la candelaria) is everything you would expect from a Peruvian celebration - dancing, colorful costumes, music, food, and of course, alcohol. The only difference is this is the biggest event of the year, likened to Carnival in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Carnaval de Oruro in Bolivia. In fact, the Candelaria festival held in Puno is the third largest festival in South America.

The Ministry of Culture released a statement regarding one of the most acclaimed Peruvian plays of 2014, after the anti-terrorist government organization, DIRCOTE announced investigations into the producers and actors for defending terrorism.

Sports

Through a press release published today, the PASO's Executive Committee expressed its complete confidence in the organization of the 2019 Pan American Games, which will be in charge of its corresponding Organizing Committee and the Peruvian Olympic Committee.

Two more wrongful-death lawsuits have been filed in connection with a helicopter crash in South America that killed five Americans and two Peruvians two years ago. The lawsuits filed this week in Portland, Oregon, say that the helicopter - under contract for petroleum exploration - broke apart in flight for unknown reasons, and the lawsuits list defective components as a possible cause.
