For reasons such as higher demand from foreign countries and local growers switching their crops to the bright blue berry, Peru has become one of the world's leading providers of blueberries. The effects of these changes gave the berry an excellent year in Peru.

Peru's Central Bank is preparing measures to stem the number of bank loans in dollars, as a weakening sol currency could threaten borrowers who owe money in greenbacks, daily Peru.21 reported.
Central Bank president Julio Velarde said the measures will be announced before the end of this year.
Around 50 percent of Peru's total loans are in US dollars. Many people and companies borrowed in US dollars over the past decade as the sol steadily appreciated against the dollar.

Peru approved the environmental study for Southern Copper's $1.2 billion expansion of its Toquepala mine, a project expected to raise copper output by 100,000 tonnes per year, the government said on Thursday.
Construction on the expansion, which will add a new concentrator at the mine and boost its tailings storage capacity, is scheduled to wrap up in two years, the energy and mines ministry said in a statement.

Minera Gold has completed a share placement and secured convertible loans to raise about $1,075,000 to advance its San Santiago copper assets in Peru and increase gold production. Proceeds will be used to increase owner operator mining at the copper operations and increase third party ore and concentrate purchases for both the copper and gold circuits.

The Peruvian government has enacted a country-wide ban that prohibits fishing of prawns and river shrimp on Tuesday, according to ProExpansion.
The fish are being recognized as some of the most sensitve marine resources the country has.
For that, preservation efforts in the form of a fishing ban on prawns that lasts until Feb. 15 2015, will work to curb the trend.

U.S. Customs have turned down shipments of Peruvian quinoa due to contamination by residues of insecticides, reported El Comercio today.
The month of November was an unfortunate one for the Peruvian quinoa market. Approximately 1% of exports were recorded to have been contaminated, or more than 200 tons out of nearly 20,000 tons according to the CEO of the Exports of Organic Agriculture, C�sar Zorrilla.

Five Royal New Zealand Navy Seasprite helicopters have been sold to Peru, Defense Minister Gerry Brownlee announced today.
"Our recent purchase of eight new, more sophisticated Seasprite helicopters meant the older model Seasprites were available for sale and a deal has been struck with the Peruvian Government for them to buy them for their Navy," Mr Brownlee says.
As well as the helicopters, Peru is buying spares and the Maverick missiles which are used with the helicopters.
