For the next two weeks, negotiators from more than 190 countries will convene in Lima, Peru, for theUnited Nations Climate Conference (COP 20). Brookings experts Timmons Roberts, Joshua Meltzer and Charles Frank offer their thoughts on the negotiations and key stakeholders.

President Humala called the climate challenge 'complex' and a 'reality'. Although optimistic about the conference, the President emphasized the need for 'concrete commitments through diverse dialogue'. Peru's goal, he said, was to deliver to Paris in 2015 the text for a new global agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol, signed in 1997.

Women leaders of indigenous peoples from around the world asked the delegations participating in COP20 to propose granting direct financing to native communities in a bid to preserve the environment and natural resources.

The global community of climate negotiators, leaders, and activists has gathered for the next 12 days in Lima, Peru to lay the final groundwork for what is hoped to be a new and powerful agreement at the climate summit next December in Paris. More than just a stepping stone, this conference - which brings together representatives from over 190 countries - will be critical in reaching benchmarks and important agreements that will make the Paris treaty possible.

Society

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced a profound reduction of hunger and malnutrition in Peru after years of implementing programs and government strategies.

Jazmine Casafranca, Program Assistant at FAO Peru, reported that from 1992 to 2012 hunger and malnutrition fell from 7 million to 2.7 million. Casafranca explained that Peru has accomplished the biggest reduction in this region of South America. This part of the continent, however still suffers as 47 million continue to experience hunger and malnutrition.

Mining and Energy

A decade of illegal gold mining has transformed large areas of virgin Peruvian rainforest into pocked, denuded, mercury-poisoned wastelands.

Excavations to separate gold flecks from tons of earth have left holes big enough to swallow a half-dozen buses. Mercury, a neurotoxin used to bind the gold, pervades the local food chain, reaching humans through the fish they eat.

Rurelec's first run-of-river hydro power plant in Peru was successfully connected to the grid.

It says this important step permits the plant to commence commissioning with live tests leading to commercial operations later in the month.

Defense

Helicopters of Russia has delivered a first batch of four military transport helicopters to Peru's defence forces, the company told TASS. The Mi-171Sh machines and technical support equipment were handed over a month ahead of the deadline specified in the contract signed last year. This was to supply 24 helicopters, eight in 2014 and 16 in 2015.
