Economy & Trade

Peru's government has taken several measures to reboot the economy, and now Finance Minister Alonso Segura says businesses have a responsibility to step up and invest.

Segura, speaking at a financial industry event, told business leaders that the "ball of growth" was now in their court, daily Gestion reported.

Peru's recent rate cut has just about exhausted the central bank's room for monetary easing, putting the onus on the government to undertake wide-ranging structural reforms to set the economy back on a strong growth track, the country's central bank chief says.

COP20 News

In 1992, more than 190 countries adopted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Since its creation the convention has sought to stabilize the emissions of greenhouse gas, in order to protect the planet.

Environment-related decisions, to be later implemented by member nations, are made at the convention through the COP (Conference of the Parties). COP meetings are held once a year.
Next Monday the UN Climate Change Conference 2014 will kick off in Lima, Peru.
Mining & Energy

President Ollanta Humala inaugurated the completion of a US$71 million wind farm project in Talara, located in Peru's northern Piura region, state news agency Andina reported.

The 17 large wind turbines, each able to produce 1.8 megawatts of energy, will provide the Northern Peru electricity grid with power over the next 20 years.  The grid supplies power to Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca, and Ancash.

Peru's Minera Antamina, which operates one of the world's largest combined copper-zinc mines, said Monday it would begin filing lawsuits against striking workers as a labor stoppage entered its 15th day.

The strike, declared illegal by the government, has led to roadblocks being erected and intimidation of employees who had turned up to work, the company said in a statement. Antamina added striking workers also face wage cuts and the loss of their jobs.

A crackdown on illegal gold mining in Peru has spawned new smuggling routes through its porous border with Bolivia with some gangs using human mules, armored cars and light aircraft to evade capture.

The gold is ghosted across jungles, rainforest and Lake Titicaca on the mountainous border, and is then sold to dealers who process the precious metal for export out of Bolivia's capital La Paz, Peruvian officials say.

Bolivia, a relatively small gold producer which has commissioned no new large mines in 2014, officially exported 24 tonnes of gold between January and August, data from Bolivia's statistics agency shows.

That is six times the amount of gold Bolivia's miners produced in the first seven months of 2014 and more than three times the total amount it exported in all of 2013, illustrating how Peruvian gold is being diverted.

The operation occurred after authorities received an anonymous tip about the trafficking of yellow-spotted turtles, which are endangered species found in tributaries and large lakes in the Amazon Basin. Staff from the The Amazon Turtles Foundation helped inspect the 2,500 rescued turtles and evaluated which ones would be safe to release.

Epidemiologists have linked El Nio, a recurring pattern where every 2-7 years warm waters in the Equatorial Pacific change the weather, to short stature, also known as stunting,  which is usually due to chronic malnutrition.
The authors found that children born in coastal Peru during and after the 1997-98 El Nio, the last strong one, have a lower height-for-age than others born before the event.

Gastronomy

Diego Munoz's main ambitions as a chef is not to change people's eating habits, but to offer them a game: different foods bring different emotions, and a meal can turn out to be an amazing emotional as well as gastronomic experience.

Munoz is the man behind the Astrid y Gastn restaurant in Lima, Peru, which he has made number one in Latin America and number 18 in the world, according to the respected "World's 50 Best Restaurants" rating sponsored by San Pellegrino & Aqua Panna. On Nov. 18, he treated St. Petersburg residents to a creative set of his own that featured 17 courses, which he presented in PMI Bar.

Tourism

Coming from Canada, we really had no idea what to expect of Peru - this was our first experience with South America, although we had travelled extensively through other parts of the world. We had heard of Machu Picchu of course (it was at the top of our bucket list) and Cusco, but other than that our knowledge was limited. So with a guide book in hand and our two kids (ages 3 and 8) we boarded the plane for the unknown with a vague plan to return to Canada after our three months' stay had ended.
