Economy & Trade

Peru's Finance Minister, Alonso Segura, underlined that the last government's measures, in particular the personal and corporate income tax cut, aim to achieve an economic growth target close to 6% by the end of 2015.

Peru's government plans to cut taxes and boost government spending to give a shot of growth to the weakening economy.

The government will cut taxes, float about $ 1.0 billion in bonds for short-term spending and speed public sector investments.

That is aimed at boosting gross domestic product by an extra 2% next year, bringing expansion to more than 5%.

Peru's government plans to cut taxes for companies and workers and increase spending to offset a slump in investment hurting the $202 billion economy.

The government plans legislation to reduce the corporate tax rate to 28 percent from 30 percent It is also proposing to cut the lowest income tax band for workers to 8 percent from 15 percent.

Peru's First Lady, Nadine Heredia, asked governments to promote a multilateral trading system, which besides being universal, should also be "open, non-discriminatory and equitable."

COP20 News

High in the Peruvian Andes 8,000 alpacas died during a particularly harsh period of cold in the summer of 2004. For the herders who raise and shear these long-haired beasts for a living, it was a huge loss amounting to one fifth of all the alpacas living in that region of the highlands. Since then international aid organizations have worked with local herders to prevent future losses in the face of extreme cold snaps that seem to be occurring more frequently there with climate change.

Mining & Energy

Peru's government on Thursday branded a 10-day long strike at the country's biggest copper and zinc mine illegal and the operating company Antamina urged laborers to return to work.

The strike, which began on Nov. 10 and stoked concerns about global copper and zinc supplies, includes more than half the mine's workforce, according to the union that called the protest to push for a greater share of profits.

Agriculture

South Korea is a major gateway to Asia for Peruvian products, said the president of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), Gaston Pacheco, at the opening of the I Forum of Business Opportunities between Korea and Peru.

Ecology

Wildlife photographer Jeff Cremer has discovered what appears to be a new type of bioluminescent larvae. He told members of the press recently that he was walking near a camp in the Peruvian rainforest at night a few years ago, when he came upon a side of exposed earth upon which there were many little green glowing dots. Taking a closer look, he found that each dot was in fact the glowing head of a worm of some sort.

Infrastructure

Peru believes railway projects that seek to link Brazil to the north and Bolivia to the south are feasible, Peruvian President Ollanta Humala said.

Peru, Brazil and China earlier this month signed a memorandum at the Apec forum in China to run studies for an inter-oceanic railway which would link Brazil's Atlantic coast with an unspecified northern Pacific port in Peru and, in turn, Chinese markets, Humala said.

At the same time, Peru's deputy transport minister traveled to Bolivia for meetings with government officials to discuss an "ambitious" railway project that faces "engineering challenges" over the route from the Bolivian capital down to Peru's southern port of Ilo, Humala said.

Drug Trafficking

The implementation of an air interdiction program to fight cocaine-carrying airplanes is being assessed by both Peruvian and US government, informed President Ollanta Humala on Wednesday.

Gastronomy

It's been two years since Martin Morales opened Ceviche - London's first modern Peruvian restaurant. Since then a clutch of others have sprung up, including Soho's Lima and Chotto Matte. Pachamama is London's latest offering.

Pachamama has a mysterious air when you arrive. The decor is a cross between a Notting Hill yummy mummy country kitchen and a self-consciously edgy Dalston bar. Think mismatched mirrors, shabby chic sideboards, whitewashed furnishings and lemon plants set within exposed brick walls and a naked ceiling. There were some nice black and white prints of photos on the walls that had clearly been taken in Peru, but it was all a bit of a mishmash. A good-looking mishmash nonetheless.

As an American, Thanksgiving is very important to me as it is for many people. Living in Peru and preparing thanksgiving dinner might be difficult. So I'm going to share with you some recipes and places to help you enjoy a delicious thanksgiving meal.

Unlike in the U.S. it's hard to find pumpkin and pecan pies, but we're in luck, because our advice columnist Sadie has written an article about where to find pies for Thanksgiving.

Tourism

National Geographic Traveler presents the New Year's must-see places. These 20 go-now destinations will send you packing. Choquequirao is one of them.

The site that has emerged looks like a film director's fantasy of a lost city. On the day I arrive a time lapse of cloud is drifting across the ridge, above a geometry of Inca stairways and terraces cut into a steep, jungly spur above the Apurmac river, 100 miles west of Cusco in southern Peru.

Culture

Expect a different sound when Susana Baca sings at the Howard Theatre on Tuesday. "I won't be performing with the usual band of Peruvian musicians," so the repertoire "is going to have very different nuances," the champion of Afro-Peruvian music said by phone from Boston, shortly after a concert there.

Backing her up at the D.C. gig, Baca said, will be a group of musicians with connections to Boston's Berklee College of Music - artists such as the Grammy-honored bassist Oscar Stagnaro, who is a professor at that institution. The band will include a Venezuelan-born violinist and a Brazilian-born guitarist, Baca said.
