COP20 News

In the lead up to the climate negotiations in Lima (COP20), Peru's Environment Minister Manuel Pulgar-Vidal called for all social and political actors to urgently address climate change globally, and expressed his hope that the COP 20 will produce a draft of the new climate agreement expected in Paris in 2015. Pulgar-Vidal noted that the world will not accept another failure like the Copenhagen Summit in 2009, and that now we are in a different world in which the effects of climate change are more evident and the public demands action.

As the countdown to COP 20, the event set to tackle global climate change issues, wanes to just weeks away, announcements such as celebrity participants have certainly kept the climate change event in the spotlight.

Mining & Energy

The Peruvian government has sent 1,000 police to dismantle illegal gold mining camps in an area known as La Pampa, where over 50,000 hectares of rainforest have been destroyed in the past six years.

The move, one of the latest crackdowns on the activity that has cost the country millions of dollars in lost fees and severely damaged the environment, comes just weeks before the country hosts U.N.-sponsored climate talks, scheduled to start on Dec. 1.

Newmont Mining Corporation today outlined a number of community investment programs - developed in conjunction with local communities - that have been implemented or are under development in the Conga project's area of influence in Peru. The programs, which are in addition to the numerous social investments Yanacocha has made over the last two decades, include efforts to advance health and education, critical infrastructure and economic development in Peru's Cajamarca region.

Gastronomy

"Every day, somewhere in the world, two or three Peruvian-inspired restaurants are inaugurated. This is the outcome of silent work performed throughout decades by thousands of fellow Peruvians, in order to strengthen the image of our gastronomy," Peru's well-known chef, Gaston Acurio, claimed on Wednesday.

Acurio was granted an award by UNESCO, in Paris, and a diploma by his Alma Mater (Le Cordon Blue) due to his work promoting Peruvian cuisine.

Like backpackers making their way along the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, the march of Peruvian restaurants on London continues.

Marylebone's Pachamama - named after the Incan goddess of fertility and harvests - follows the opening of Lima Floral in Covent Garden this summer and Seor Ceviche (which we also reviewed) in Soho just a month ago.

Tourism

Leading up to the release of his feature film, Paddington Bear has been making his rounds while visiting his native home of Peru. Spotted at the airport and around the city of Lima, the fictional bear certainly proves how well he has adjusted to a domesticated lifestyle.

His wild (and real) counterparts can be found at the luxurious Inkaterra Andan Bear Sanctuary, located in Machu Picchu. Guests at the eco hotel are offered the chance to see the endangered spectacled bear, the only bear species native to South America.
