Peru's economy grew 2.7 percent in September from the same month last year, state statistics agency INEI said on Monday, beating market expectations.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected the economy to expand 2.1 percent in September. 

Economy & Trade


The third stimulus package, recently promulgated by the Peruvian government, will help increase more confidence among businessmen and boost the capital market, reported the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).
 



Peru's Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) will host the ExpoPeru fair scheduled to be held from November 17 - 19 this year in New York City.

The fair's main target is to advertise products to potential American customers and ease their positioning in the foreign market. 


COP20 News


Paraguay has confirmed the participation of a delegation at the 20th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP20) to be held next month in Lima, Peru, Foreign Minster Eladio Loizaga said Monday while on an official visit to the Peruvian capital. 



Cultural activities, discussions about actions undertaken by NGOs and interreligious meetings will take place during the 20th UN Lima Climate Change Conference (COP 20), to be held from December 1 - 12 this year.

The events will be organized by the Ministries of Culture, Environment and other organizations.
A cultural agenda has been drafted. It will be defined and spread to potential audiences in the upcoming days via Internet.

There could be no better event or opportunity to express this epic mission, than the UN Climate Conference, where the world's leaders will be gathering to draft what should be considered one of the most significant documents the world has ever seen. 



In September 2014, Diana R�os lost her father, a member of the Ash�ninka community, in what many believe to be the vicious actions of illegal loggers.

Months later, on November 17, R�os was awarded by the Alexander Soros Foundation in the United States. 

 



The nonprofit group Global Witness makes some valuable points in a new report offering Peru a path to cut the violence on its poorly governed resource frontier in the Amazon. The report, "Peru's Deadly Environment," is being released today at a Manhattan event organized with the Alexander Soros Foundation. 

Mining & Energy

 



ContourGlobal LLC, the biggest operator of wind power in Peru, is planning to double its investment in the country, expanding the list of developers seeking to expand in one of Latin America's fastest-growing markets for renewable energy.

 

CountourGlobal invested $250 million in two wind farms in Peru that have a combined capacity of 114 megawatts and were completed in August. The New York-based company may spend another $250 million through 2017 on more wind projects and small hydroelectric plants, according to Alessandra Marinheiro, chief executive officer for Latin America. 

 



Peru's Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining has granted an award to renewable energy developer Ergon Power, for the installation of solar on 150,000 households in parts of Peru without power.



Peru's Minera Antamina, which runs one of the world's largest copper-zinc mines, said operations are "maintaining their normal pace" despite a strike that entered its eighth day on Monday.

A ship carrying 45,000t of copper concentrates left the port of Punta Lobitos on November 16 bound for Asia, the company said in a statement. Antamina said it had put in place a contingency plan after workers walked off the jobNovember 10 to pressure for a bigger slice of profits and better labor conditions. 

 



BPZ Energy has contracted T-Rex Engineering and Construction to build two drilling platforms for the Delfin and Piedra Redonda prospects in block Z-1 offshore Peru. Water depths at the prospects are 200 ft (61 m) and 250 ft (76 m), respectively.

Construction of the decks is under way at the T-Rex facilities in Texas, with jacket and pile construction in Louisiana. Installation of both platforms is scheduled for mid-2015.

Peruvian engineering and construction company Gra�a y Montero late Monday announced that its Chilean subsidiary Vial y Vives - DSD S.A. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Samsung Engineering Chile, a Chilean Agency of Samsung Engineering Co., Ltd.

The MoU is for the project "Civil Works and Electromechanical Assembly of the Combined Cycle Power Plant" located in Mejillones, II Antofagasta Region, Chile.


 

The franchise market in Peru will reach the US$ 1.1 billion at year-end 2014, which means a 20 % growth in comparison with 2013, estimated the Vice President of the Peruvian Chamber of Franchises, Walter Aguirre. 

Agriculture & Fishing


Peruvian fresh produce exports are poised for huge growth in volumes and sales over the coming years as demand for its widening range of fruit and vegetables continues to climb.
Peru has already witnessed staggering growth in its fruit and vegetable export sales over the past ten years - from US$220m in 2003 to a forecast US$1.8bn in 2014 - and is on course for further expansion as output across practically every product category continues to increase.

 

Fish meal prices in Peru, the world's biggest producer, have jumped to the highest in more than a decade amid low anchovy stocks off the country's coast, lifting feed costs for salmon and shrimp farmers.

Spot prices for prime fish meal were $2,370 a metric ton last week, climbing 66 percent from $1,430 a ton at the start of the year, according to data from Peru Broker SA. Falling output of fish oil and meal in Peru may create an "explosive" price situation, industry analyst Oil World said last month.

Development


The Peruvian government will assign S/. 1,700 million (about US$ 586 million) for the development of the VRAEM area in 2015, declared the Executive Secretary of the Multisectoral Commission for Pacification and Economic Development of the VRAEM (Codevraem), Luis Rojas.
Education


Education is a great tool required to transform the country and leave poverty behind, expressed today President Ollanta Humala during the inauguration of the Gregorio Albarracin Military School in the Southern city Tacna.
"Education is fundamental. Here [at school] you are provided good teaching, which can be the change [needed] to improve the economic situation [...]," claimed the Head of State.
Diplomacy


The Japanese government made a donation to Peru, which will modernize the equipment needed for proper training in Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) transmission. The donation is valued in 106 million yen (around US$ 931,034), confirmed the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

Tourism



The Uros islands are a group of 70 man-made totora reed islands floating on Peru's Lake Titicaca. Its inhabitants, the Uros tribe, pre-date Incan civilization and continue to hunt and fish the plentiful land and waters they occupy.

 

Photographer Enrique Castro-Mendivile captured Andean actors performing a re-enactment of the legend of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo on a Uros island in early November. According to an Inca legend, Manco Capac and Mama Occllo emerged from the waters of the lake carrying a golden staff instructed by the sun god Inti to create a temple in the spot where the staff sank into the earth. The actors involved in the re-enactment were locals from the islands.
