Hydroelectric power, wind energy and other renewable sources can provide most of Peru's power in the future as the country seeks to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. Renewable energy can account for 60 percent of Peru's energy mix, up from about 50 percent, with natural gas and oil supplying the rest, Energy and Mines Minister Eleodoro Mayorga said yesterday in an e-mailed statement. He did not provide a timetable for the transition.

The fifth and final EC145 helicopter ordered as part of a programme to renew the National Police of Peru's (NPN's) helicopter fleet has been handed over by Airbus Helicopters at the Police Aviation Unit facilities in El Callao.
The first four EC145 helicopters delivered under the contract have already accumulated more than 800 flying hours, performing a range of surveillance operations and support for parapublic missions, in addition to sea rescue and MEDEVAC missions in Lima and Callao. There are several ways to explore Lake Titicaca islands. The majority of visitors come from Puno, located on the Peruvian side, and by far the largest city by the lake. Tour operators usually arrange a two-island excursion for day trips and all three of the major islands on the Peruvian side for overnight tours. On the Bolivian side, the main port is located in the town of Copacabana and the most accessible island is Isla del Sol. Isla de la Luna is also a popular stop and is often included on the Isla del Sol itinerary. Boat rates are cheap, starting at $6 for a round trip ticket.

British animal charity Animal Defenders International (ADI) has stripped circuses in Peru of all wild animals after embarking on one of its biggest rescue attempts.
