Peru plans to nearly close its gap in electrical coverage in rural regions by the end of the decade with a recently-awarded $28.5 million solar-energy contract, the government said on Wednesday. Ergon Peru S.A.C., which beat one other bidder on the contract awarded on Friday, will install 500,000 solar panels across Peru and guarantee their operation for 15 years, said Energy and Mines Minister Eleodoro Mayorga.

Thanks to high-resolution models of the oceanic circulation and water oxygen content, IRD researchers and their partners have now quantified this ecosystem's sensitivity to various disturbances in the equatorial Pacific. This work should eventually enable a regional modelling platform to be set up integrating the oceanic, biogeochemical and atmospheric components of the Peru-Chile upwelling.

The Peruvian Air Force has taken delivery of the first two of 20 KT-1 trainer aircraft from Korea Aerospace Industries under a 2012 contract worth $200 million.

This past week Venezuela hosted a Social Preparatory Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (Social PreCOP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The meeting was intended to prepare States, with the input of civil society, for COP20 that will take place in Lima, Peru in the first two weeks of December of this year. Instead it appeared to highlight the diversity of opinion on climate change and the wide gap that exists between States and between civil society and States.

The event enables Peruvian traditional dishes and desserts to be put on display for potential diners.

 In coordination with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, a Peruvian prosecutor, and the National Police of Colombia, investigators captured and arrested wanted lawyer and businessman Rodolfo Orellana Rengifo. Sued for money laundering and criminal conspiracy in July, Orellana has been a wanted fugitive by the national authorities. Yesterday, the suspect was captured in a secluded residence in Cali, Colombia.

 Peru's Institute for Press and Society, IPYS, called on the government to investigate the murder of a journalist over the weekend, and not write it off so quickly as the result of a botched robbery. In an interview with Ideeleradio, IPYS President Alvarez Rodrich said that it is too early to say that the murder of Fernando Raymondi, a young reporter with leading news magazine Caretas, was a robbery that went bad.

 Seven people working in Peru's Marine Industrial Services (SIMA) died on a floating dock in Iquitos yesterday at around 8:50 p.m. after allegedly inhaling toxic gases. The workers were waiting for a vessel to dock when they detected a fault in a tank. On entering the tank to try to fix the problem, they inhaled the toxic gases that killed them. Only three survived and were taken to the Naval Clinic and the Regional Hospital of Iquitos for treatment.
