President Ollanta Humala and China's President Xi Jinping signed a series of agreements in Beijing on Wednesday, following the three day APEC Summit meetings.

The agreements consolidate several specific projects in the mining and petroleum industries, but the pioneering project is a memorandum of understanding to create with Brazil a Twin Ocean Railroad Connection, providing rail transport from coast to coast to increase trade between Pacific Rim countries and the Atlantic.

The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Peru and of Brazil with China's National Commission of Development and Reform.

Economy & Trade


Peru is raising great expectations among investors in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) bloc, as it is considered a very dynamic economy and one of the countries that lead the region's economic growth, said Peruvian President Ollanta Humala.
 

Mining & Energy


Chile narrowly eclipses Peru as the most attractive country for electric power investments in Latin America, according to a new BNamericas survey.

More than 26% of those questioned - energy company decision-makers and stakeholders from across the region - rated Chile top while Peru gained 23% of the vote.



Peru's top copper and zinc miner, Antamina, said that a partial labor stoppage had not hurt its production, but the union striking for a second straight day on Tuesday said output was likely down by at least 90 percent.

Zinc prices rose on Tuesday in part on concerns the strike would further tighten global supply, but the stoppage appeared not to significantly affect copper prices amid expectations of a surplus next year.
 



Praxair, Inc. announced it has signed a long-term contract to provide hydrogen to Repsol, one of the world's largest producers of petrochemicals. The new steam methane reformer (SMR) will be constructed at Repsol's La Pampilla Refinery, in the Callao district, near Lima, and is expected to start up in 2016.

"We are honored to have been selected to build this hydrogen plant in Peru," said Domingos Bulus, president of Praxair South America.



Petrobras has completed the sale of 100% of the shares of its wholly owned subsidiary Petrobras Energia Peru (PEP) to the China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), for the sum of $2.6 billion, according to a press release.  

Agriculture



Camposol is set to become the largest employer in Peru thanks to its rapidly expansion berry production and export operation. The company is to hire around 10,000 new employees in the next six years, bringing its total workforce to 25,000 during peak production periods.

The new positions include cranberry harvesters in the Chao/Vir� area, irrigation installation operators and maintenance technicians, and workers for the blueberry packing plant.

Infrastructure


Peru's Transportation and Communications Minister Jose Gallardo has revealed that the government is considering plans to build a $9.5bn new coastal railway line that connects the northern and southern regions of the country.

Claimed to one of the largest railway projects in the country, the 1,340km-long line will run along the Pacific coast.

Education


 Peru's National Scholarship and Educational Credit (Pronabec) will organize the first international education fair known as "Beca Presidente de la Rep�blica" (President of the Republic Scholarship).

More than 100 universities from 51 countries will display their academic programs to potential Peruvian students.


Environment & COP20


In a follow-up to the major agreements between the United States and China announced this morning, here's more detail on the climate change issues the two world leaders discussed. They have had constructive dialogue on these points for several years, and The New York Timesreports that the agreements culminated from talk over the past nine months. The new announcements by the two nations, which generate 45% of the world's pollution, should spearhead commitments from other nations in advance of and during the upcoming world summit in Peru.


Peru, the host for December's UN climate change summit, stores nearly seven billion metric tons of carbon stocks, mostly in its Amazon rainforest. That's more than US annual carbon emissions for 2013 which were calculated at 5.38 billion tons, the new research by the Carnegie Institute for Science (CIS) shows.


Communities affected by climate change were given a voice last week, at the four-day gathering of civil-society and social movements known as the Social Pre-COP. The event, held on Margarita Island in Venezuela, concluded on 7 November and was an important precursor to December's UN climate talks in Lima, Peru (COP 20).


The Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest (AIDESEP) began a campaign to fight climate change via illuminated panels of energy-efficient LED technology last Friday.

Initially on display for four days, the panels will be installed again when the Lima UN Climate Conference (COP 20) begins in December said Efe Segundo Chuquipiondo, communications coordinator of the indigenous group, "Voces por el Clima" (Voices for the Climate).

Diplomacy



Xi urged both countries to enhance high-level contact and exchanges between governments, legislative organizations and parties; the promotion and development of a bilateral free trade area; and the cementing of cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, mining, infrastructure and agriculture.

China will actively participate in the construction of a railway running from the Peruvian Pacific coast to the Brazilian Atlantic coast, Xi said.



China's top legislator Zhang Dejiang met visiting Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso here Wednesday.

Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) told Humala that China has always cherished its relations with Peru and expects to deepen cooperation with it in all areas.

The NPC would like to work with the Peruvian parliament to jointly create a favorable legal environment for cooperation between the two countries, Zhang said.

Gastronomy



As part of his international tour and taking advantage of his presence in the APEC summit, the President of Peru opened in Beijing the first Peruvian gastronomic festival with the presence of Foreign Minister Gonzalo Gutierrez and Minister of Foreign Trade, Magaly Silva.
 



Owner and founder of Florida based chain Aromas of Peru, Chef Javier Fl�rez is named best Peruvian chef in the United States after winning the "Cuchillo de Oro" 2014.

Fl�rez was awarded by the General Consul of Peru in Washington, D.C., Cesar Jordan Palomino, in the second annual "Cuchillo de Oro" or Golden Knife, according to a press release. Organized by the Peruvian American Chef Association or PACHA, the event held a gala and dinner to celebrate the awards.


Tourism



The Uros Islands are a group of 70 man-made totora reed islands floating on Lake Titicaca, which according to Peru's tourism board iPeru is the world's highest navigable lake at over 4,000 meters above sea level. The Uros people fish and hunt, but tourism is their main source of livelihood.
