Lima-born chef Diego Oka travels the world, cooks for the hungry masses and spreads the word about delicious Peruvian food. Not a bad gig. Perhaps you are familiar with the country's famous roast chickens, bright sauces, goat cheese-spiked huancaina sauce and ceviche as far as the eye can see? Peruvian cuisine is recognizably Latin American, with staples like fried plantains and rice and beans, with splashes of the cultural influences from around the globe. Take tiradito for example, a Japanese-Peruvian hybrid that is popping up on menus that recently only sported ceviche, crudo, carpaccio and tartare. A protege of renowned chef Gastn Acurio, Oka has been cooking this fast-growing cuisine for nearly a decade and currently serves as Executive Chef at La Mar at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. So don't let the baby face fool you. When we spoke, Oka was gearing up to head the kitchen at the James Beard House for a sold-out dinner.

Barranco is well documented and in the history of this area of Lima those in the know understand it well. This area has two lives, it has two distinct aberrations that are available to all who are adventurous and like to explore the light and dark sides of life. One of these is visible in the light of day and the other, like the life of a vampire, only can be experienced at night.

Peru's drug trade was once highly centralized and facilitated by one powerful man: the government's former spy chief, Vladimiro Montesinos. Montesinos, and his system, are gone, but traffickers still need their political brokers. It has been more than a decade since Montesinos, commonly referred to as President Alberto Fujimori's "Rasputin," received his first sentence in what would grow to be more than 30 convictions for crimes including embezzlement, influence peddling, death squad involvement and bribery. He has also been convicted of orchestrating a 1999 arms deal in which 10,000 assault rifles were sold to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels.
