Global anti-corruption campaigners at Transparency International elected Peruvian lawyer Jos� Ugaz as its new head on Sunday marking a shift from quiet diplomacy in combating fraud and bribery toward more grassroots activism.

Ugaz, best known for leading the investigation against former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori for corruption and human rights abuses, beat the former head of the World Trade Organization Pascal Lamy by 75 to 49 votes, the advocacy group said. 

Economy & Trade


Peru's net international reserves stood at US$ 63.33 billion in the week ended Oct. 14, with an amount of foreign currency remaining high and equivalent to more than 19 months of imports, reported the country's Central Reserve Bank (BCR).
 


Mining & Energy


Peru is considering the installation of a new liquefaction plant on the southern coast or the addition of a second train to the existing Peru LNG facility to absorb rising natural gas production.

A new liquefaction plant could be built at a $15bn energy complex that the government is promoting on the southern coast, according to state-owned PetroPeru commercial manager Gustavo Navarro. The complex will include gas-fired power plants and petrochemical units.

Politics


Around 83 percent of Peruvian citizens feel unrepresented by political parties and most of them think political leaders should be honest enough to restore confidence among political circles, according to the latest urban survey conducted by Ipsos Peru.
 

COP20


While giving a keynote speech in Lima, the chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Rajendra K. Pachauri, claimed that climate change affects those more vulnerable inhabitants of Peru.
 



The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize recipient and chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel of Experts on Climate Change (IPCC), Rajendra Pachauri, affirmed Peru is able to adopt a sustainable industrial development to tackle the climate change world that threatens the world.
 



Over 40 representatives of the Regional Indigenous Peoples Organization of the East (ORPIO) and the Confederation of Amazonian Nationalities of Peru (CONAP) gathered in the city of Iquitos, Loreto region to get information and prepare local proposals to COP20.
 

Agriculture


Importing countries are willing to pay a higher price for organic bananas and pay more than twice for a box of this product than for a box of conventional bananas, said Odilo Duarte Bode, an agronomist graduated from the Agrarian University La Molina (Peru).
 



In Peru, many small or medium asparagus producers are switching to more profitable crops, such as blueberries or table grapes, as exports are expected to register a slight decrease through 2015.
 

Diplomacy


The Peruvian Foreign Minister, Gonzalo Gutierrez Reinel, ensured the ambassador of Angola to Brazil and Peru, Nelson Cosme, that Angolan diplomats will be able to join the Diplomatic Academy Javier Perez de Cuellar of Peru, Angop learned on Sunday.
 



Foreign Minister Gonzalo Gutierrez has laid out the government's plans to strengthen the presence of Peru in the African continent in order to boost the bilateral trade.
 



The United States Department of State is currently financing a solid waste management project presented by 20 Peruvian fellows of a program at the U.S. Embassy in Lima, which will favor the native community of Huilloc, descendants of the Inca lineage.

A birding team from LSU (Dan Lane, Mike Harvey, Glenn Seeholzer) and Peru (Fernando Angulo) broke the all-time, big-day record with 354 species in 24 hours, on the way to Abra Patricia Moyobamba in San Martin and Amazonas.

The international recognition of the cajon drum as a Peruvian instrument spread over the Americas will become official on November 1 at the Organization of American States headquarters, located in Washington, D.C., United States. 



Thousands of people crowded into downtown Lima on Saturday to participate in a procession at the start of a five-day festival that carries a painting of the capital's patron saint, the Lord of Miracles, on daily treks through the streets.

Two British girls stuck in a bleak Peruvian jail are the faces of a multi-million pound ad campaign to warn youngsters of the risks of becoming drug mules. Melissa Reid, 21, from Scotland, and Michaella McCollum, 20, of Northern Ireland, are serving seven years each after they were caught at Lima Airport with �1.5million of cocaine.They will feature in hard-hitting Foreign Office TV ads plus posters and a social media blitz next month.



A campaign organized by the Plastic Surgery and Burns Service, at the Loayza Hospital, will offer surgery to those with cleft lip and palate malformations. Referred to as "V Free Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery," the campaign will benefit at least 100 persons.
