Gaston Acurio is a giant. Not just physically big, although he is that, a great bear of a man with a mop of black ringlets and a smile that seems larger than his face. The 46-year-old chef is a colossal figure in Peruvian life as well, rumoured to be so popular in his homeland that the country's Presidency would be his for the asking.

Gaston Acurio already has 44 restaurants worldwide, serving the best of his country's native cuisine.

Tourism

The Inca Empire carved hundreds of tracks into the Andes - lofty conduits for the hardy messengers, traders and warriors who were regularly tasked with walking their lengths. This network of high mountain trails may be extraordinarily scenic, but you have to be 'un poco loco' ('a little crazy') to attempt the sky-scraping Choquequirao route to Machu Picchu.

Lima could be called the city of the Huacas. I had no idea just how many there were within the Lima proper, nor that the surrounding areas held even more. I had only time on this exploratory expedition to visit three main areas, and now I have become a huaca addict I need to find others! I have learned there is even one that can only be seen in the basement of a church. Please enjoy this photo journal highlighting some of the huacas I was able to visit.
Culture

Richard Huff, executive director of Texas' Irving Arts Center, who is retiring in August after 20 years on the job, had been looking to go out on a high note.

He appears to have hit it with the "Peruvian Gold: Ancient Treasures Unearthed" exhibit, the show's only stop in the U.S. after a popular five-month run at the National Geographic Museum in Washington. It opened Saturday in Irving.
