Investment bank Credit Suisse forecasts that Peru's gross domestic product will grow four percent this year and 5.7 percent in 2015, thanks to the efforts of the government to provide stimulus measures aimed at bolstering the country's demand.
Economy & Trade


Peru's country risk indicator, measured by the EMBIG Peru spread, fell from 156 to 149 basis points on September 16-23 this year, reported Sunday the Central Reserve Bank (BCR).

Thus, Peru's country risk has remained below the Latin America's average that closed at 401 basis points at September 23.


Corruption in Peru results in annual losses of almost 10 billion soles ($3.5 billion), representing about 2 percent of the country's gross domestic product, Prime Minister Ana Jara said.
 


 

Mining & Energy


The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will provide loans of $23.2m and $44.1m in support of the Marcona and Tres Hermanas wind farm projects, located south of Lima.

The two projects will add a total of 132MW of renewable capacity to national grid and will supply power to an estimated 500,000 Peruvian consumers.

Infrastructure


An investment of 260mn soles (US$92.4mn) is required to improve water and sanitation services in the Tumbes region, said Peru's housing, construction and sanitation ministry.

Pending the approval by local Tumbes government, the ministry plans to allocate 43% of funds towards potable water coverage, 36% to wastewater treatment and 21% to sewerage services,.


Politics


Mario Vargas Llosa, Peru's Noble prize-winning author, said Wednesday that he will work on preventing Keiko Fujimori from being elected President in 2016.

Vargas Llosa supported President Ollanta Humala when he ran in a second round vote against Fujimori in the 2011 election, narrowly defeating the former congresswoman and daughter of jailed ex-President Alberto Fujimori.


Diplomacy


Foreign ministers of Peru and Chile, Gonzalo Guti�rrez and Heraldo Mu�oz, respectively, met in NY on the sidelines of the 69th UN General Assembly, and agreed to jointly submit the maritime boundary coordinates -established by the International Court of Justice in The Hague- to the said intergovernmental organization. 

Earthquake


At least eight people have been killed and five others injured by 5.1 magnitude earthquake that struck late Saturday the Peruvian southern region of Cusco, Peru's National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) reported. 



Rescuers search for survivors after an earthquake in a remote area of southern Peru which has killed at least eight people.



Chilean President Michelle Bachelet expressed her solidarity with the victims of the 5.1- magnitude earthquake that struck Paruro province in Cusco, southern Peru, and voiced the support of her government to these communities in such difficult times.

 




Gastronomy

Armed with citrus and spicy peppers, La Pandilla Leche de Tigre (The Tiger Milk Gang) is spreading knowledge and skill of the culinary arts to an international crowd. Led by Gaston Acurrio (arguably the Godfather of Peruvian cuisine), the group is completed by Hector Solis (La Picanteria), Mitsuharu Tsamura (Maido), and Virgilio Martinez, whose restaurant Central was the recent winner of Best Restaurant in Latin America.
Tourism




Peru is on track to become "a world power in tourism" thanks to the wide variety of attractions to be offered to foreign visitors, the Andean country's Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) said on Saturday.

Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) said over half of Latin American vacationers (57 percent) have visited Peru more than once, which confirms how well Peru is perceived as a tourist destination. 

Sports



Ines Melchor of Peru set a South American record of 2:26:48 in finishing eighth in the Berlin Marathon, often referred to as the "fastest marathon course in the world". Over 40,000 runners from 130 nations participated in the event that covered Berlin's flat terrain. The 42.195 kilometers race is part of the World Marathon Majors Series. 

Film



Salvador del Solar is a known Peruvian actor, however on September 24, he gained recognition as a budding film director. Solar�s debut project, Magallanes, took home the Film in Progress award at the 62nd San Sebastian Film Festival. The recognition will bring the film to the attention of international buyer�s who could ultimately showcase it to a global audience. Watch the trailer!

Miscellaneous


The chief judge of the Peruvian Constitutional Court, Oscar Urviola, will leave for Seoul to participate in the 3rd Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice (WCCJ), event that brings together the leaders of constitutional justice from around the world. 



A Spanish speleologist is still waiting to be rescued from a two-kilometre (1.2 miles) deep cave in Peru after he fell and badly injured his back and legs 11 days ago. 



The aircrafts are intended to keep communities vigilant of harmful or invasive threats.

Used at the beginning of August 2014 to reach never-before-seen angles of the archaeological site Chan Chan, drones are now being implemented to keep watch of Amazonian territories; more specifically, those inhabited by indigenous communities. Currently receiving training, Peruvian indigenous leaders are learning to operate the pilotless aircrafts as a form of protection from threats they have recently faced.
 



ASoul of the Peruvian Andes was started by Luis Rebatta and Gabriel Garcia who left the country over 50 years ago to study in the U.S. They bring a caravan of volunteer medical professionals to help people who live in the Andes and have little or no access to medical care.
