Peru's Energy and Mines Ministry has reported the country's mining industry has a portfolio of projects worth US$61.5 billion in planned investment, which is the second largest amount in the region after Chile's.

The Peruvian port of Callao is getting ready to change itself into a new centre of trade and development for the Latin American Region. APMT is currently investing more than USD 750 million in the port's multi-purpose north terminal to convert it into a world-class facility capable of handling containers, bulk, ro-ro, general cargo and cruise vessels.

Peru and Chile have a major potential in mining with the two nations standing out together as the largest hub for mining investment worldwide, Chile's Trade Office Director in Peru, Veronica Tramer, has said.

Agriculture


More than 700 government officials from 50 countries across the world are expected to attend the 3rd World Resources Forum (WRF) which will be hosted by Arequipa, in southern Peru, from 19th to 23rd October. 



The cultivated area of table grape in the coastal Piura region, in northern Peru, increased by 150 percent, from 2,000 hectares that existed in 2013 to 5,000 hectares this year, Piura's regional government has reported.

This rapid increase in area, mainly of the Red globe variety, was due to the arrival of major agricultural exporting companies to the region, such as Ecoacu�cola, which already has 2,500 hectares, according to new data from the regional government's Investment Promotion Office.
 



Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Magali Silva, opened Thursday the 7th International Asparagus Congress, an event aimed at showing the world the importance of asparagus and analyzing the sector's current situation and the vegetable's productive chain.
 

Social Inclusion



Peru has made a great progress in the fight against hunger in Latin America by taking out more than four million people from food shortage over the last two decades, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). 


Diplomacy



Americas Society will present Peruvian President Ollanta Humala with the Gold Insigne, the organization's highest honor, in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments as president of the Andean country.

Americas Society's Gold Insigne is awarded to democratically elected heads of state from the Western Hemisphere who work to promote greater awareness of the cultural, social, and political realities of the region, and greater understanding among the nations of the Americas.



Ministers of Peru and Ecuador will hold a joint meeting to keep track of the progress made by the two neighboring nations in pushing ahead with development and social inclusion policies.
Defense


Russia will deliver 8 Mi-171Sh multi-purpose helicopters to Peru's air force in December, the deputy director of Russia's arms export agency was quoted as saying Friday.

Peru, a major buyer of Russian military hardware, bought 24 helicopters from Russia for $406 million in December last year for use in combating drug trafficking and to replace eight Mi-17 military transport helicopters purchased from the Soviet Union in 1984 

 

 




Gastronomy



Over the course of its 10-day run, more than 400,000 people visited the fair that encouraged `mistureros� to "eat well, eat healthy, eat Peruvian". Not quite the half a million in attendance organizers were hoping to receive, the turnout was still greater than 2013�s figure of 350,000. Predictions regarding foreign visitors were spot on however as 30,000 tourists arrived in Lima, Peru.
