Peru leads efforts in Latin America to expand financial inclusion through the implementation of the new electronic currency system aimed at boosting it across the rural areas, the World Bank (WB) said Monday.

Credit Suisse investment bank today asserted that the appointment of Alonso Segura as finance minister of Peru will ensure policy continuity, which should be reassuring for the local business and international investor communities.
 



Just days into his position as newly appointed Minister of Finance and Economy, Alonso Segura feels confident about Peru�s economic future. He already appears to be taking initiative towards jumpstarting movement and growth in the economy.
 

Mining & Energy


Minera Gold will move out of a trading halt to announce it has exercised an option to acquire the San Santiago processing plant in Peru. The acquisition of the San Santiago Assets is a "walk-in/walk-out" transaction and will cost US$5.5 million with settlement to take place on Wednesday 17 September 2014.
 

Sanitation


Peru is seeking investors for $19 billion of projects through 2021 to help improve access to potable water and sanitation in the South American country.

The government will auction the rights to build and operate water infrastructure works while opening up state-owned sanitation companies to private capital.

Diplomacy



Peruvians have long been waiting to hear when the Schengen visa will be lifted, allowing for wider and easier travel.

While previous reports had merely glanced at 2015 as the likely date of elimination for visa requirements, now government members in the know are feeling more certain that next year will bring good travel news.



Peru's Foreign Ministry (MRE) hosted on Monday a special ceremony to commemorate the 193rd anniversary of Central American Independence from Spain.

 The head of the Peruvian diplomacy, Gonzalo Gutierrez Reinel, extended his warmest congratulations to people of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, during the ceremony held in the nation's capital Lima.
Human Rights


Diego Garc�a Say�n, judge and former president of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and former Foreign Affairs Minister of Peru, spoke Tuesday at the Hesburgh Center on the importance of the court in promoting democracy in Latin America.

Say�n spoke at an event sponsored by the Kellogg Institute of International Studies. He said that he has "an optimistic view" on the role of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

The Peruvian navy has purchased two surplus Royal Netherlands Air Force Fokker 50 transports.

Previously operated by the air force's 334 Sqn from Eindhoven air base in the VIP transport role, aircraft U-05 (20253) and U-06 (20287) have been parked at Lelystad airport pending their sale, and kept in an airworthy situation and flown on a regular basis. 

 


 




Gastronomy



The seventh edition of Mistura, the premier gastronomic fair of Latin America, came to its end on Sunday and it is said to have been the best ever made so far as it improved tremendously not only its culinary repertoire, but its organization.
 

Tourism




Tourism industry in Peru currently accounts for 3.8 percent to 4 percent of the annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the country's Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) reported Wednesday.

A total of 1,325 Quechua-speaking communities settled along the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in the Cusco region, have benefited from a CAF's, Development Bank of Latin America, campaign aimed at persuading travelers to venture Peru's inland.

A national anthem is engrained in the memory of citizens from a young age. But is it that common to find someone who knows the anthem of foreign country by heart?

During the 1930�s and 40�s, the United States was interested in improving the relationship it had with war-stricken Latin American countries. As part of Franklin D. Roosevelt�s so-called Good Neighbor policy, a competition opened in 1945 for the best translated adaptation of The Star Spangled Banner. Rather than just a simple word-for-word translation, the BBC Mundo reports that "the goal was to make this version in Spanish as close as possible to the original so that it could be sung by Latin Americans".

Miscellaneous


Found in a river, the body reportedly has evident bullet wounds.

On September 1st, a group of Ash�ninka community leaders from Peru were murdered while on their way to meet fellow Ash�ninka community members in Brazil.

One of the deceased had been immediately identified as, Edwin Chota, head of the Alto Tamaya - Saweto community. Police had worked with native community members to search for evidence related to the deaths.



A British woman returned from a holiday in Peru hearing scratching noises inside her head to be told she was being attacked by flesh-eating maggots living inside her ear.

Rochelle Harris, 27, said she remembered dislodging a fly from her ear while in Peru but thought nothing more of it until she started getting headaches and pains down one side of her face and woke up in Britain one morning with liquid on her pillow.
