In a recently-published report, Morgan Stanley has raised its Peru's economy growth expectations for 2015 to 5.3 percent from an earlier forecast of 4.8 percent on the back of a stronger performance of the nation's mining sector.
Economy & Trade

Chile and Peru reduced borrowing costs to the lowest levels in three years as policy makers seek to stimulate growth in economies expanding at the slowest pace in at least four years.

Chilean policy makers, led by bank President Rodrigo Vergara, cut the benchmark rate by a quarter point to 3.25 percent as forecast by all 22 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Peru's policy makers, led by bank President Julio Velarde, also cut by a quarter point to 3.50 percent, matching the forecast of 11 of 17 economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

Chile and Peru in the second quarter both posted the slowest economic growth since late 2009, as falling copper prices halted a mining industry investment boom. Weaker growth didn't prevent inflation from accelerating in eight of the past 10 months in Chile and in four of the past eight months in Peru. Chile has cut rates seven times in the last 12 months, while Peru has carried out three reductions in the same period.

Peru lowered borrowing costs for the second time in three months after slower inflation gave the central bank room to stimulate an economy growing at the slowest pace in almost five years.

Mining & Energy

Annual mining investments in Peru, a global powerhouse in base and precious metal production, have increased sixfold over the past 10 years, according to state news agency Andina.

Mining investments have been key to reducing Peru's poverty from almost 60% in 2004 to 24% in 2013.

Peru, the world's sixth top gold producer, said the shipment of the precious metal to India is likely to surpass $270 million this year.
To boost trade in gold and other commodities, the Latin American country is considering signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India.

Infrastructure

Peru has awarded a contract to perform pre-investment studies for Lima's No. 3 metro line, according to documents from private investment promotion agency ProInversin.

The study was awarded to a consortium comprised of Ingerop Conseil et Ingenieri, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Alpha Consult and Metropolitana Milanese, with a US$17.5mn budget proposal.

Agriculture

Peruvian blueberry exports amounted to US$5.6 million in the period between January and July 2014 , up 408% compared with the same period in 2013, the Association of Exporters (ADEX) reported on Wednesday.

Health

A new report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) found that the number of Peruvians with health insurance has increased during the second quarter of 2014.

Gastronomy

U.S. chef and senior director of Culinary and Hospitality Services at Kennesaw University, Gary Coltek, says Peruvian cuisine is growing exponentially in the United States and all over the world.

"It is growing exponentially, and actually in our university we had one year that we served Peruvian food, all year, in 2012. We fed 8,000 people a day," he replied when asked about Peruvian cuisine popularity in the United States and all over the world.

Gastn Acurio visited Mistura yesterday to take a look around the Gran Mercado and cook at the Gran Mercado's kitchen (new this year).

He talked with small producers in the market, prepared an Andean chupe with Wednesday's supercholo (the Peruvian ingredient of the day) aj, and talked with 14 cooks who have come from all over Peru to take part in the Regional Cuisines demonstrations taking place each day in the Gran Auditorium.

While many Peruvians and foreigners are enjoying Mistura, just outside the gates is an opposing group of people who has a beef with the most important gastronomical fair in Peru. You can call them "haters" but they prefer to be known as "Proyecto Libertad" or, Project Freedom.

Tourism

The Peruvian government will continue working towards creating and improving policies aimed at enhancing the quality of tourism services, and thus luring more overseas visitors, President Ollanta Humala said on Wednesday.

Before Lima, the first historical capital city of Peru was Jauja. Now, the past can connect with the future (more easily) as the city, located roughly 265 kilometers northwest of the present day capital, advances in transportation.

Situated 400 meters above the city, Rimacs highest hill, San Cristobal, offers a 360-degree view of Perus capital, Lima. Visitors have always had to make the trip up and down by foot or bus. Currently, however, the Municipality is planning to build a `parapuerto,or jumping base, to offer paragliding from the hills crest.

Culture

Lawyers at Peru's Ministry of Culture said that it would present criminal charges against a woman who has built a house only meters away from the Kuelap archaeological fortress, daily El Comercio reported.
Film

"The Gospel of the Flesh", written and directed by Eduardo Mendoza de Echave, has been chosen as Peru's official submission for the Oscars' Best Foreign-Language Film category.
