The confirmation of Peru's investment grade sovereign credit rating (BBB+) with stable outlook, reflects the nation's potential of driving sustainable growth over the mid- and long- term, the financial ratings agency Standards and Poor's (S&P) has said. 

Economy & Trade


Peru's private investment promotion agency, Proinversion, is set to carry out a three-day road show in Canada in a bid to promote opportunities for Canadian investors in a number of infrastructure projects and sectors with great potential.
 



Standard and Poor's (S&P) ratings services praised the Peruvian government's strong focus on the development of infrastructure nationwide while being supported by a sustained effort to develop public-private partnerships (PPP).

Americas Petrogas Inc. (BOE) and its subsidiary, GrowMax Agri Corp., are pleased to announce that its Peruvian subsidiary, America Potash Peru S.A., has received favourable initial trench and near-surface results from its Bayovar Property phosphates area. 

Telecom


Chilean telco Entel plans to invest USD1.2 billion in its Peruvian operations during the 2015-2020 period, representing an annual spend of just under USD250 million. In an interview with El Comercio, Manuel Araya, Entel's Manager of Regulatory and Corporate Affairs explained that the injection of capital is needed to reshape Nextel Peru to target primarily mobile data subscribers. 
Environment


For the eighth year in a row, Conservamos por Naturaleza (Preserving by Nature), will hold the Seed Funding Competition, according to a recent press release from the initiative. The competition, which aims to encourage and promote voluntary conservation work throughout Peru, is open to any conservation initiative based either in the Amazon, Cusco, Loreto, San Martin or Madre de Dios.


n December, climate negotiators will converge in Lima, Peru, for the 20th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It will mark a milestone for the

Durban Platform on Enhanced Action, the process established in 2011 that is supposed to end with a new climate change agreement at the 2015 COP in Paris.

As the new agreement takes shape, it is clear that forest landscapes will be part of the negotiating agenda.

 




Diplomacy


Juan Carlos Capu�ay Chavez, a career diplomat specializing in Asian affairs, has been named new ambassador to China, the nation's Foreign Ministry (MRE) has announced

His appointment was authorized Tuesday by the head of State, Ollanta Humala Tasso. Thus, Mr. Capu�ay is set to replace Gonzalo Gutierrez Reinel as Peru's top government executive in Beijing.
Health


With assistance from the Ministry of Health (Minsa), communities of the Amazonas Region of Peru are receiving an improved approach to the important issue of HIVAIDS. Free screening, antiretroviral treatment and prevention programs have been under way since March 2014. Together with the Regional Health Authority of the Amazonas (Diresa), Minsa hopes to implement not just prevention and therapy programs, but to break down common myths and fear of talking about the issue of HIVAIDS.


Gastronomy



Celebrity chef Gaston Acurio has announced that he will be retiring from managing his flagship restaurant, Astrid y Gaston.

Gaston, a 46-year-old chef, founded the Lima restaurant two decades ago with his wife, German-born Astrid Gutsche, a pastry chef and chocolatier.

Astrid y Gaston ranks not only as one of the best restaurants in Latin America but 18th in the Pellegrino world's best restaurant list.  Perhaps more importantly, it has been credited with launching Peruvian cuisine internationally and instilling pride in local food at home.



Deli Viva had only been opened for about two months when the Peru This Week team decided to visit this new, four-table, cozy restaurant/cafe on the ever-popular Av. La Mar in June. Working in a partnership with Punto Organico, the organic market situated next door, Deli Viva uses many of the organic products sold at Punto Organico in the food that they prepare. Deli Viva enjoys an abundance of takeout customers as well.

Tourism




The number of tourists that visited Peru's northern region of La Libertad has doubled in the last seven years partly due to the improved tourist services, said the Regional Office of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala on Wednesday congratulated the national under-15 football team for their history-making gold medal performance at the 2014 Boys' Youth Olympic Football Tournament in Nanjing, China. 



Young athletes from around the world have been competing in the 2014 edition of the Summer Youth Olympics, held in Nanjing. Far from home, young Peruvian representatives have been making their country proud.


The Peruvian boys demonstrated some fancy footwork throughout the competition, especially in dead-ball situations where they had a profusion of set-piece specialists to call on. Both goals in the opening win over Iceland came from free-kicks, including Gerald Tavara's sublime effort that put the young Blanquirrojas 2-0 ahead. In the second game against Honduras, two spot-kicks set the South Americans on the way to a 3-1 victory, with Inca forward Franklin Gil scoring one and winning the other. Peru also exploited their long-range shooting strengths, most notably with captain Fernando Pacheco's looping effort from distance that clinched victory in the finale.


The International Surfing Association has chosen Peru to be host of 2014�s surfing competition. The 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games (WSG) is an ISA World Championship that brings together surfers from all over the world to compete in Team, Open, and Women divisions. Surfers will be looking to catch a break on the waves of Punta Rocas.

Chiseled 'chalanes' surrounded her, their white tunics and cream hats that are traditional wear for Criollo horseback riders offsetting the Peruvian inspired style worn by the sensational model.



Two years ago, the French-born, Peru-based textile specialist Thomas Jacob accompanied a friend on a trip to the San Jorge prison in Lima. "I was struck by the dignity of the inmates," the 27-year-old recalls. "They didn't have a mind for pain, they just accepted their fate with sobriety and humility." He located two similar correctional facilities near the country's capital - Santa Monica in Chorrillos and San Pedro in Lurigancho - and established a system that would enable the inmates at each to work together making clothes. The nascent fashion collective took its name,Project Piet�, from a masterpiece by Michelangelo.

Dutch murder convict Joran van der Sloot has been moved to a remote Peruvian penitentiary after authorities said he threatened to kill the warden of his prison, his lawyer confirmed on Monday.
