Peru's Gross Domestic Product accelerated in the second quarter after posting a 1.7 percent year-on-year increase from the same period 2013, achieving 19 straight quarters of growth, the National Statistics and Information Institute (INEI) said Monday. 

Economy & Trade


The Russian government recently announced that they would no longer be accepting importations of meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy products from various foreign countries, including the European Union, the United States and Australia. This has opened a great window of opportunity however for Peru. Carlos Garcia, head of the Foreign Trade Center of Lima�s Chamber of Commerce, is eager to "introduce non-traditional products" to the power-wielding country that is Russia.
 



The 2014 Peru-Korea Business Forum starting today will bring together around 100 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from different sectors interested in business opportunities.
 



A delegation of Peruvian businesses led by the country's export and tourism promotion board (PromPeru) will attend the Expocamacol International Fair, the region's largest event for the construction industry in Colombia.
 

Mining & Energy


 
Behind only Chile, Peru is set to become the second-largest producer of copper, according to Peru officials. Peru is taking second place from China thanks, curiously enough, to Chinese investment of the Las Bambas, one of the country�s largest copper projects. In general, Peru hopes to add 1.2 million tonnes of copper to its production by 2016, according to Guillermo Shinno, deputy mining minister. 



The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) has loaned $65 million to Siemens Energy for the delivery of turbines to two projects in Peru, with a total capacity of 129MW.

The loan will allow Siemens to ship the turbines to the Marcona and Tres Hermanas projects, being developed by Cobra Energia.
 



 
Peru will be playing host to the Minding & Investment Latin America Summit, held at The Westin Hotel.

Focused entirely upon mining investment and efficiency, the event expects to draw over 600 attendees. The event is a great opportunity for those involved in the mining sector to network with other investors, miners or government representatives from Latin America.



Buenaventura is Peru's largest precious metals company. It is engaged in the exploration, mining and processing of gold, silver, copper, zinc and lead. Buenaventura owns 9 gold and silver mines directly, where copper, zinc and lead are produced as side products. Additionally, the company has stakes in 5 subsidiaries, among which Yanacocha (43.65%) and Cerro Verde (19.58%) are the most important. 
 

Education



Peru's National Scholarships Program and Educational Credit (Pronabec) budget will be larger starting next year, resulting in 25,000 scholarships for deserving students who intend to pursue undergraduate and graduate studies at universities in Peru or overseas. 

Fight against Drugs

 



The representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Peru, Flavio Mirella, said Monday Peru has made the most remarkable progress in the fight against illegal drug trafficking over the last 14 years.
 

 




Science


During extensive research in the Andes, new members of the amphibian family have been discovered. According to the National Geographic, of the four species were found, three appeared to have green bones. The frogs belong to the aptly named glass frog family (Centrolenidae). This type of frog has very little known history.

Enrique Zileri

 


 



Enrique Zileri, publisher and long-time editor of Peru's leading news magazine Caretas, passed away early Monday.  A well-known defender of press freedom and a tireless investigator of corruption, he was 83 years old.


Gastronomy


The grey skies and cold temperatures of the winter season in Lima are no impediment for seafood lovers to enjoy the best fish and seafood that the Peruvian cold waters have to offer. This week we visited 'Los Calamares,' a typical seafood place located in the limits of Santiago de Surco, Barranco, and Miraflores.
Tourism




Peru's export and tourism promotion board (Promperu) is set to take part of this year's edition of Tourism Latam, the region's top-line up and most influential event for the tourism industry, it was reported Monday.

Sports



A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck a sparsely populated area of central Peru on Sunday, the same day that the country's U-15 team beat Cape Verde Islands to reach the final of the Boys' YOFT 2014, where they will face Korea Republic this coming Wednesday. The sad news at least provides Juan Jose Ore and his charges with added motivation to put a smile back on people's faces at home. 



The Chiclayo-based football club Juan Aurich move closer to a league title in the Peruvian Primera Division with 2-1 victory over the Lima's headquartered San Martin, while Melgar slipped up once again.
Miscellaneous


 It seems that the prisoners confined in Peru are hungry for attention this week.

Serving a 28-year sentence for the murder of a young Peruvian woman in 2010, Joran Van der Sloot has made headlines once again.

He is protesting his recent transfer to a higher-security prison.
