Peru is set to become the world's second-largest copper miner, behind neighbouring Chile, thanks to a $20bn pipeline of Chinese mining projects, according to senior officials in Lima. 

Economy & Trade


Peruvian President Ollanta Humala is expected to visit Saudi Arabia in 2015 to participate in the fourth Summit of South American and Arab Countries (ASPA) and launch negotiations for a free-trade agreement.
 



Business leaders of India land in Peru at end of month, President Humala set to visit the east next year.

Edgar Vasquez, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade of Peru, recently had an online meeting with members of India�s Chamber of Commerce. As the two countries finalize details before signing a Fair Trade Agreement, Vasquez has made requests that Peru have greater access to the Indian market.
 



The monetization coefficient of Peru's credit to private sector maintained its upward trend with a level equivalent to 37.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter from 36.7 percent in the previous period of 2014.
 



Peru's private sector credit in soles grew at annual rate of 14.1% in July this year, according to a report by the country's central bank BCRP.
 



Peru's gross domestic product expanded just 1.7% in the second quarter from the same period a year earlier, as weakness in natural-resource sectors hurt growth.

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru said investments and exports fell sharply in the quarter, although private sector and government officials forecast a recovery in the second half of the year.


 

Mining & Energy


 

The sale at year-end of Peru's bankrupt La Oroya metallurgical complex may draw bids from at least five international companies, said a representative of the smelter's workers.

The former Doe Run Per� unit has been offered to more than 20 local and international firms, said Juan Cangalaya, a lawyer representing the smelter's workers on the board of creditors.



 
The Peruvian government is working on a settlement of a strike by Shougang Hierro Per� iron ore miners as the stoppage entered a fifth day Friday, the union said.

 The Ica region's office of the labor ministry is brokering talks between company and union officials after clashes between workers and police at the mine, Hierro Per� union spokesperson Cirilo Yarihuaman told BNamericas. The strike is the third at what is Peru's only iron ore mine in the past 12 months. 

Agriculture



The international demand for quinoa is ever-increasing, sparking some to even say that it is depleting the supply in the nation from where it originates, Peru. However, through programs and funding of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI), quinoa crops are being added to the Peruvian coast. 

Diplomacy


Peru on Saturday strongly condemned the beheading of American journalist James Foley by extremist Islamist militants, calling it "an abominable crime".

"The Peruvian government condemns strongly the abominable crime perpetrated against the American journalist James Foley by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) (now called Islamist state), the Andean country's Foreign Ministry said in an statement.


Peruvian Foreign Minister, Gonzalo Gutierrez, and his counterpart from Colombia, Maria Angela Holguin held talks on coordinated preparations for the two countries' presidential meeting and bi-national cabinet meeting.
 



The government of Australia has recently announced the appointment of Nicholas McCaffrey as Australia's next Ambassador to Peru, who will replace the ongoing diplomat John ML Woods PSM.
 According to a press release from Australia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nicholas McCaffrey will take over in Lima from September 2014, and will hold non-resident accreditation for Bolivia. 

McCaffrey is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has previously served overseas at Australian missions in Manila, Buenos Aires and Madrid.
 




Infrastructure


Peru received seven bids in a tender to carry out pre-investment studies for the construction of Lima's No. 3 metro line.

 With a referential budget of US$21.9mn, the studies will determine the ideal design and route for the line, while taking into account the project's economic feasibility.

 


 


Gastronomy
 


The young chef is taking the flavors of Peru to the U.S. capital. A name lesser known than other Peruvian internationally recognized chefs, Carlos Delgado is on his way to becoming the next best Peruvian export.
 



Seven years have passed since the first Mistura Gastronomic Fair was launched. Many things have changed since then, and its popularity has not stopped growing. In 2008 there were around 30,000 at the event and this year the organizers are expecting 30,000 foreigners alone to visit, and they are certainly expecting to surpass the 350,000 number of people that attended last year.
Tourism




Peru will be promoting its tourist attractions in the United States with the aim to boost foreign tourist arrivals to the Andean nation, Peru's export and tourism promotion board (Promperu) said on Saturday. 



The archaeological site of Ventarron, a 4,000-year old temple with painted murals in Lamballeque region, has been included in the Moche Route to enhance tourism in northern Peru.
According to data from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Lambayeque's top five tourist destinations recorded a decline in inbound tourists last year.



Thanks to the national boom of gastronomy, Traveler Magazine included Lima in their list of "The 50 Most Intelligent Cities in the World". A National Geographic supplement, the publication compiled an international list of "essential places, people, trends, and ideas" that have grabbed the world's attention. Described not just as urbanized but "edible" by the magazine, Lima's food and chefs are highlighted for taking diverse influences as well as having a world-wide impact themselves.

Peru will face off against Korea in the final of the men's football competition at the 2nd Youth Olympic Games after both teams prevailed in their semi-final matches at the Jiangning Sports Centre Stadium on Sunday.

Miscellaneous


A large 6.9-magnitude earthquake has struck a sparsely populated area of central Peru, the U.S. Geological Survey said Sunday.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, said Mario Casareto, spokesman for Peru's fire agency. He said authorities were still surveying the region, including the Ayacucho area where the quake was centered. 



The Rolling Stones, one of the world's longest-running and most popular rock bands, would play their first-ever concert in the Peruvian capital Lima next year.

According to information obtained by local news channels, after almost three years of negotiations with a Peruvian firm, the legendary rock band would perform on March, 18, 2015 at the Monumental Stadium as part of their "14 On Fire" world tour, which will include Argentina.


Serving a seven-year jail sentence, Melissa Reid seems to have been inspired by her new surroundings to give a piece of advice. Confined inside the Ancon 2 prison of Peru, Reid divulges in the nightmarish reality that has come after her attempted stunt as a drug-lord. On the hand-written message, the 21-year old convict warns that "it's not smart, not big and definitely not clever" to sell drugs. 



Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, has been moved to a remote Peruvian penitentiary after authorities said he threatened to kill the warden of the prison where he was serving a 28-year term for murder.
