Peru's finance minister said on Thursday that the country's slowing economy will likely recover to grow by 5.2 percent in the second half of 2014 from the same period in 2013 because of strength in mining and construction.

Finance Minister Luis Miguel Castilla said the economy likely grew by 3.3 percent in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2013.

"We've passed the low point in growth for the country and we are entering a phase of clear recovery in coming months," Castilla said on the sidelines of an event.

Peru's economy is rebounding from the slowest growth in four years after the government expanded fiscal stimulus to offset a slump in metal exports and investment, Finance Minister Miguel Castilla said.

Gross domestic product will rise 5 percent in the second half of the year, after expanding a "disappointing" 3.3 percent in the first half, Castilla said at an event in Lima today. He reiterated his forecast for GDP growth of as much as 4.5 percent for the full year.



The value of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) across all sectors of Peruvian economy is likely to record more than US$ 13 billion by year-end 2014, thus surpassing the US$ 10 billion booming mark recorded in the period ended June.
 



A report from Business Monitor International (BMI) shows that Peru's retail market is experiencing rapid growth, which is attracting plenty of international retailers.

Experts say this trend is driven by an expanding middle class, easier access to credit, smaller households and increasing urbanization.
Mining


Mariana Resources latest hole from a scout drilling programme at Condor de Oro in Northern Peru indicated more copper and gold, though with no notable intersections.
Agriculture



Peru's agricultural exports of fresh fruits and vegetables grew by 34 percent to 543,413 net tons by the end of the first half of 2014 over the same period last year. 



Peruvian table grape industry is currently experiencing a rapid expansion phase due to the extension of its production, said Fernando Cilloniz, president of Peru-based consultancy firm Inform@ccion.


Table grapes could be seen as an olive branch between Peru and Chile as experts see possibilities for partnership concerning the fruit.
Fight against Drugs


Delegations from Peru and Chile have gathered in Tacna, southern Peru, for the eighth meeting of the Joint Committee on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.

Peru announced the country is prepared to detect people infected with the Ebola virus within 24 hours, thanks to modern laboratory and personnel trained in biosafety, the National Institute of Health (INS) reported Wednesday.

Peruvian-born golfer Lucia Gutierrez made the country proud by winning the 2014 California Women's Amateur Championship held last week at the Quail Lodge Golf Course in Carmel, California.

 This is Gutierrez' first amateur triumph in the United States and comes after claiming first at the respected South American Women's Amateur Championship held late January in Barranquilla, Colombia.


As part of the highly competitive Dakar Series event, a total of 66 celebrated racers from Peru and abroad are set to participate in South America's toughest off-road rally called "Inca Challenge 2014".

Miscellaneous


The number of foreign workers entering Peru with temporary work visas ballooned to 4,153 in June this year, up 19 percent over the same period in 2013, according to new data from the National Institute for Statistics and Information (INEI).
