The value of agricultural exports from Peru totaled US$2.05 billion in the first half of 2014, representing a 26.3 percent increase over the same period last year, the Peruvian Association of Exporters (Adex) said on Friday.

 According to ADEX's agro director Giannina Denegri, much of the growth was driven mainly by an increase in shipments of vegetables and fruits such fresh grapes, mangos, avocados valued at US$1.2 billion, accounting for nearly 60 percent of total agricultural exports. 
 "Higher export volumes of non-traditional products such quinoa, asparagus, evaporated milk and preparations used in animal feeding also drove the January-June increase", Adex's official said.

Peruvian businesses are enthusiastic about the emerging opportunities to expand trade with Russia, Russia's charge d'affairs, Vladimir Belinsky, has told ITAR-TASS in an interview.

"Peru's businessmen are prepared to considerably step up food supplies to the Russian market," he said.

Peru's Private Investment Promotion Agency (Proinversion) awarded Colombian group ISA a 30-year concession for transmission project Friaspata-Mollepata.

ISA won in Lima a new public bidding process that will generate annual revenues for USD 5.718.307, and which reference investment estimated by Proinversi�n is calculated in approximately USD 49.5 million.
Fight against narcotrafficking


Peru's anti-drug chief is calling on political parties to break ties with candidates suspected of having connections to drug traffickers.

"The political parties are the main ones responsible for undertaking an exhaustive check of their candidates so that Peruvians can elect the best people for the public post," Alberto Otarola said.

Infrastructure



Peru's national telecommunications investment fund (Fitel) is set to award fiber optic projects in four regions across the Andean country, it was reported.
The project will benefit Apurimac, Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Lambayeque regions. The projects stipulate the deployment of a fiber optic transport network as well as access infrastructure for the provision of telecoms services in these four regions.

Peruvian cuisine lovers in Seoul will get one final chance to enjoy an authentic culinary experience Monday with a special demonstration of the ins and outs of the South American nation's signature cocktail, pisco sour.
After a two-week food tour as part of the Peruvian Food Festival, hosted by the Embassy of Peru in Seoul, in collaboration with the Grand Hyatt Hotel, locals will be able to treat themselves by tasting Peruvian flagship drink, pisco.
According to a Korea Herald report, Peru International Trade will sign an agreement this week with local retailers, including E-mart and Lotte, to start selling pisco.

Cultural tourism in Peru is a segment which is attracting a growing number of domestic travelers who are keen on further knowing their nation's cultural heritage, it was reported Friday.

According to a new report from the Peruvian export and tourism promotion board (Promperu), 68 percent of the total domestic tourists are eager to carry out cultural-related economic activities in the Andean country.

 

A suggestion to extend the opening hours of Machu Picchu - Peru's most famous landmark - has been met with concern over increased visitor footfall damaging the ancient ruins.

Visitor demand for the 15th-century site - located on a mountain ridge above the Sacred Valley of the Incas - is high, with a 2,500 person limit imposed to retain the site's World Heritage status granted by UNESCO.

A documentary showcasing the vast Peruvian Amazon will be screened in August at the New Haven Free Public Library in the state of Connecticut, U.S.
"The Peruvian Amazon: A World Like No Other" will be shown as part of a fascinating lineup of film screenings from all over the world.
The informative film, directed by Peruvian filmmaker Felipe Degregori, will be showcased on August 14 at 5:30 p.m.

A Peruvian art exhibit featuring 35 hand-stitched pictures created by women of Pamplona Alta, a shantytown of Lima, Peru, will open this month in Billings, Montana, U.S.
The fabric narratives will be displayed in an exhibit titled "Crafting Change Through Cloth and Community" at Rocky Mountain College's Ryniker-Morrison Gallery, according to an article on Billings Gazette.
Archaeology


A research team working in Peru, with members from France, Peru and the U.S. has found a way to track the El Ni�o Southern Oscillation going back as far as ten thousand years. The team reports that their study of clam fossils has revealed clear patterns of the ENSO and report that it has not been increasing in intensity over the course of the Holocene as some have suggested.
Sports



Peruvian capital Lima along with Birmingham in Alabama (USA) and Russian city Ufa has submitted an official bid for the 11th edition of the World Games 2021, it has been announced.

It follows the official opening of the bid process by the International World Games Association (IWGA) in January, with all three cities have successfully submitted their bids to the governing body by the deadline of July 31. 
First held in 1981, the World Games takes place every four years in the year following the Summer Olympics.
