Peru's economic growth is likely to pick up again to an annual rate of 6 percent in both 2015 and 2016, while it will rebound in the fourth quarter of this year, the Economy and Finance Minister, Luis Miguel Castilla, has announced. 

Economy & Trade


The Lima Chamber of Commerce's Institute for Economic and Business Development (IEDEP) projected that construction sector growth in Peru will reach 6.8 percent amid a positive economic environment this year.
 



Peru's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to surge to 4.8 percent by year-end, above the average for South America set at 1.8 percent, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) said in a new report.
 



The average unemployment rate in the Lima region, Peru's capital, came down from 6.8 percent in 2012 to 5.9 percent in 2013, according to the Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
 



Non-traditional exports from Peru to the European Union (EU) have grown by 19.7 percent in the period from January to May this year, according to the Peruvian Association of Exporters (Adex).
 

Mining & Energy

 

 Peru's President Ollanta Humala stressed Monday the recovery of the gas "Lot 88" of the Camisea field for supplying the domestic market will consolidate the domestic offer, thus developing the industrial sector. 


 

Peru approved an environmental study for Southern Copper Corp's $1.4 billion Tia Maria project, clearing the last major hurdle to construction, Deputy Mines Minister Guillermo Shinno said on Monday.

The company said last week that if the approval came now, construction on the 120,000-tonne-per-year copper mine would start late this year and take about two years.

Agriculture


 

Peru accounts for 87 percent of the worldwide population of alpacas by totaling an inventory of 3,685,516 distributed along the Andean regions of the national territory, the country's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) said Friday.
 

Environment


Scientists have long known that halting climate change will be impossible without stopping the destruction of the world's forests.

Along with providing the planet with oxygen, trees also store huge amounts of carbon. When they go up in flames, it enters the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, the main gas causing global warming.

Diplomacy

 

Peru's President Ollanta Humala Tasso is set to attend the inauguration ceremony for his counterpart from Colombia Juan Manuel Santos on August 7th, Peruvian Foreign Ministry (MRE) reported Tuesday.

Peru's "chaotic" urban transport system generates losses of US$20bn a year due to health, transport and economic costs, state news agency Andina reported.

Luis Guti�rrez, head of Latin American BRT association (SIBRT), said accidents, pollution-caused breathing problems and sedentary-related illnesses cost US$8bn a year in Peru.

Sitting on the deck of a small river-cruise ship, I listened to the never-ending sounds of the Amazonian rain forest. Beside me was a retired business executive, a fellow passenger whom I had just met the day before.

As the sinking sun bled into the darkening sky and the riverbanks along this tributary of the Peruvian Amazon turned from green to black, he told me of his days in Lagos in the 1970s and Dubai in the 1990s, then lapsed into silence.

Peruvian Jorge McFarlane set new national record of 13.53 seconds capturing gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the 16th Ibero-American Championship in Athletics held in S�o Paulo, Brazil.


Peru will take on Panama in a rearranged friendly clash at the National Stadium on Wednesday evening, it has been reported.
Peru and Panama are using Wednesday's friendly as an opportunity to run the rule over some of their younger players. Peru have slipped to 59th in the FIFA rankings after suffering an eight-match winless run.

The Peruvian music world is in mourning today after news broke that actor and musician Rafael Santa Cruz died at approximately 1:00 AM this morning.

El Comercio reports that Santa Cruz died of a heart attack. 

 

Archaeology


In a new video release and an accompanying article, Brien Foerster explores the ancient  large stone towers which most archaeologists believe were used by the Inca and Huari for burials, asking "were the towers made for funerary purposes? Or used long AFTER they were first constructed for that?"
