Lima is to host the 2015 meetings of the boards of governors of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

The announcement was made this morning by Premier Rene Cornejo, accompanied by World Bank secretary Mahmoud Mohieldin and IMF secretary Jianhai Lin, as well as Finance minister Luis Miguel Castilla and Central Bank president Julio Velarde.

The Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Gercetur) estimates that Lambayeque exports are likely to exceed US$ 400 million this year after recording a significant growth in the first quarter.

Peru's private investment promotion agency (ProInversion) is expected to launch in three months a new bid for licenses to build compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped gas in 12 major cities across the Andean nation, it was reported Monday.

Forensic teams have begun the long-delayed exhumation of members of an Amazon tribe that suffered devastating losses during Peru's 1980-2000 conflict with Shining Path rebels.
The first body, unearthed over the weekend, wore the standard ochre robe of the Ashaninka, said Ivan Rivasplata, leader of the forensic anthropologists from the Peruvian prosecutor's office engaged in the mission with army escorts.

Peru and Honduras have ratified the government-to-government agreement which lifts visa restrictions for their respective citizens, according to a supreme decree published in the official gazette of El Peruano official daily.


The governments of Peru, Mexico and Colombia seek closer cooperation among immigration agencies to combat organized crime at airports and international borders, Peruvian Deputy Foreign Minister Fernando Rojas said on Monday.


The US Consul General in Lima Elizabeth Power announced that Peru has had a sustained reduction in visa refusal rates in the last three years due to its solid economic growth.

Peruvian Ines Melchor on Sunday won the woman's race at the 54th international 15-km race called "Quito-Ultimas Noticias", the most important one in Ecuador.

Peruvian Melchor won the women's category, like last year, with a time of 51 minutes and 55 seconds.

Fast fashion giant H&M has announced its intention to open two stores in Lima, Peru.

According to El Comercio, the Swedish clothing chain plans to open its first store in Peru at Jockey Plaza some time in 2015. El Comercio also reports that a second, smaller store is planned to open in Larcomar; no opening date has been given. 



Paddington fans have been given a first glimpse of the Peruvian bear in movie star mode.

The character has been pictured outside Buckingham Palace looking less cuddly and more grisly than the bear fans of the 1970s series would be used to. Watch the trailer!

 


A closely-monitored businessman in Uruguay has been arrested for allegedly laundering some $25 million in drug money for Peru's former intelligence chief, Vladimiro Montesinos.

Sergio Hermida, a football contractor and president of Montevideo's second division Waston basketball team, has been monitored since 2008, according to a report in Diario16. Over the past two years investigations began to show that he had allegedly laundered money for Montesinos.



An international investigation by Peruvian and American authorities resulted in the capture of one suspect.

According to El Comercio, the suspect, Jimmy Torres Aquije, is 40 years old. Law enforcement officials had been following his illicit online work since 2011. Torres was difficult to locate, as he used different public computers as well as computers borrowed from friends in order to hide his IP trail.
