Fueled by a recovery in the second half of the year, Peruvian exports are expected to post an annual hike of 5 percent by 2014-end, a new economic forecast from Universidad del Pacifico said. 

Economy & Trade


Employment in Peru's formal sector increased to over 1.135,000 between 2007 and 2012, thus raising to a record high of 25.7 percent, according to the National Statistics Institute, INEI. 



The number of exporting enterprises engaged in Peru's key manufacturing sector soared by 60 percent over the last five years, the country's Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) announced Thursday. 



A group of 120 Peruvian export-oriented companies are set to hold business meetings Thursday with 92 buyers from 13 countries of the region at the mega business roundtable Industria Peru 2014, organized by the National Society of Industries (SNI). 

According to the event organizers, the international leading buyers come from Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Dominican Republic and El Salvador. 

Mining & Energy


 

Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversi�n prequalified three groups for natural gas pipeline concession Gasoducto Sur Peruano.

The prequalifiers are Gasoducto Sur Peruano (Odebrecht-Enag�s), Gasoducto Peruano del Sur (GDF Suez-Sempra-Techint-TGI) and Energy Transfer.

Technical and economic offers are due on June 26 and awarding will take place in subsequent days.

The US$3.6bn project envisions a 1,000km, 32-inch diameter system divided into three stretches.

Potential offtakers include thermoelectric and petrochemical plants, among other users. The concession includes an option to transport liquids, such as ethane.

 

 



Peru's Energy Social Inclusion Fund (FISE) has benefited 3'825,125 people across the Andean nation by providing vouchers to access to cheap domestic gas, according to the country's Energy and Mines Ministry (MEM). 

 




Technology


 

Peruvian regulator Osiptel has revealed that over the three years from 2011-2013 it has ordered cellcos to return a total of PEN13.5 million (USD4.78 million) to 7.1 million customers affected by service outages and issues relating to quality of service or billing. According to the watchdog the lion's share of the refunds were issued in 2013, with PEN7.06 million - just over half of the total for the three years - repaid in that year. Spanish backed Movistar was reportedly the worst offender, with Osiptel instructing the provider to return PEN4.4 million whilst America Movil's (AM's) Claro unit refunded PEN1.2 million. 

Environment


The United States government is set to hand over US$3 million to the Peruvian region of Ancash to fight the effects of climate change.

According to El Comercio, the money will come from the United States Agency for International Development, commonly known asUSAID. The money will be used to fund projects meant to prevent and mitigate the effects of climate change in the region.



The continuing explosive activity at the Ubinas volcano in southern Peru has had locals worried for months, and now the volcano's picked up a new trick- throwing rocks.

The Peruvian authorities must ensure that all those suspected of criminal responsibility in the tragic events in Bagua are brought to justice, said Amnesty International today on the fifth anniversary of the violence which left 33 people dead.

Diplomacy


The government of Peru ratified today its political will to effectively tackle corruption as part of a national action plan slated for 2016 in its presentation before the Organization of American States (OAS).

In the framework of the Forty-fourth Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly, the Peruvian Foreign Minister Eda Rivas said corruption is a modern and transnational phenomenon and president Ollanta Humala is willing to fight it head on.  



Peru's government is committed to strengthening the inter-American system and respect the freedom of expression, which is tied to democracy in the region, said the Andean nation's Foreign Minister Eda Rivas.

The senior Ollanta Humala administration official highlighted the importance of debating "Development with Social Inclusion" as the focus of the 44th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Peru has been ranked on a list of Top 10 best countries in the world for photographers, according to data compiled by the Sydney Morning Herald.

According to the Australian news agency, the Andean country was included on the list due to its mountainous scenery and its bustle and colour big city of Lima.

Peru's counter-narcotics police broke up a ring that shipped cocaine from Lima's international airport to Mexico on commercial flights by swapping out unsuspecting passengers' luggage with identical suitcases, their commander announced Thursday.

The passengers' real bags would be put on later flights.

The arrest of eight employees at airport services companies through Wednesday followed the April and May detention of five police officers assigned to the airport, also for alleged cocaine smuggling.
