Peruvian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at an annualized rate of 4.8 percent from January to March this year, Banco de Credito del Peru has reported, citing figures released by the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) of Peru.

Mining & Energy


Talara oil refinery upgrade's mega project is likely to boost tourism and economic growth in Peru's northern-macro region fueled by a significant increase in the demand for goods and services in Piura, it was reported Wednesday. 



This nearly half-century-old Amazon boomtown has gone bust with the government's recent crackdown on illegal gold mining.

Mayor Marco Ortega estimates more than 22,000 people have left Huepetuhe since the government halted gasoline shipments in April and sent troops to destroy heavy machinery used in mining that it deemed illegal.

He says only about 3,000 people remain.

 




Fight Against Drugs


President Ollanta Humala has named a new antidrug czar, appointing former defense minister Luis Otarola to replace Carmen Masias as head of the government's drug-fighting agency, Devida.

Mr. Otarola, a lawyer, said Thursday that eradicating coca leaf plants will continue, but stressed that the government will place a greater emphasis on finding legal activities for coca leaf growers. "There will be eradication but with a conversion to productive activities," Mr. Otarola told RPP radio.



Peruvian anti-drugs police dealt a substantial blow to narcotrafficking in the region of Ucayali after confiscating 578 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the jungle.

According to Peru21, 600 "bricks" of cocaine were discovered by police in the Padre Abad province of Ucayali. The drugs were hidden in a pit in a forested area, and were intended for trasport to Colombia and Brazil.

Diplomacy


Peru has signed a Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons with Poland, thus allowing the reciprocal exchange of prisoners from the two nationalities as well as the respective legal assistance from both countries. 

Defense


Peru's Air Force (FAP) is expected to receive a delivery of eight new Russian-made helicopters in November, with an additional 16 to come in 2015, Peruvian Defense Minister Pedro Cateriano said.

Peru's Chamber of Tourism says that if the United States approves a visa waiver for Peruvian citizens, tourism between the two nations will grow substantially.

Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Magali Silva announced today that Lima had been chosen to serve as the host for the next Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants awards.

Lima also hosted the event last year. However, Minister Silva emphasized the importance of such a ceremony in cementing Lima's foodie reputation.

Peruvian fashion designer Claudia Bertolero has bagged the 'International Rising Star Award 2014' for the most promising designer at the recently concluded Miami Fashion Week.
At an event in Lima, Magali Silva, Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism and President of the Board of the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (Promper�), congratulated the Peruvian delegation that participated in the Miami Fashion Week.

"Thanks to such events, Peru can show what it has to offer in fashion design. Peru's textile and garment exports reached US$ 1.918 billion last year, and both Promperu and the Ministry of Foreign Trade are engaged in finding new markets to offer Peruvian products to the world," Minister Magali Silva said.

Peruvian surfer Benoit Clemente achieved gold-medal performance at the recently-held South American Beach Games, which took place in Vargas state, Venezuela, it was reported Wednesday. 



Peruvian capital Lima has been revealed as the host of the 2015 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Junior Championships, it was reported on Thrusday.

Lima was the only city campaigning to host the World Junior Championships, but the BWF Council still needed to ensure the bid met the necessary criteria, particularly with the proposed venue - the National Sports Village - still currently under construction. 

 



With the start of their World Cup just two weeks away, England face Peru in their last home friendly at Wembley.

Chosen by England because of their supposed similarity to World Cup opponents Uruguay, the South Americans will relish the chance to play at Wembley and face England for the first time since 1962.

Ex-assistant to Vladimiro Montesinos told tribunal that former intelligence chief transported large amounts of money in chicha press scandal.

Peruvian legal authorities are currently investigating the chicha press scandal, in which the Alberto Fujimori re-election campaign paid tabloid editors to publish libellous stories about political opponents.



New law will require shopping centers to have adequate emergency first aid supplies as well as an ambulance service to transport injured shoppers.

According to Andina news agency, the newly-approved Law 30200 will require malls to have adequate first aid supplies to attend to customers in the event of an emergency, as well as access to an ambulance service for extreme cases. The ambulance would be required to take patients to the nearest hospital. 



Peru's government has set up systems to block the use of mobile phones in prisons, in an attempt to prevent inmates from perpetrating crimes from behind bars, state news agency Andina reported.

The Interior Ministry said that the systems, which also block WiFi, have been installed in the El Milagro prison in the northern city of Trujillo and the Picsi prison, also located on the north coast in the city of Chiclayo.
