China was the main destination for Peruvian exports to Asia in the first quarter of the year, with shipments worth US$1.8 billion, up 22.6% from the same period a year earlier, Peruvian Association of Exporters (ADEX) reported Wednesday.

Peru's Camisea Consortium announced Wednesday that royalty payments to Peru's government from natural gas operations in April amounted to US$ 97.3 million.

These resources are distributed according to the current Canon Law, corresponding to the regional government of Cusco and Municipal governments around 50 percent of the amount, that is, US$ 48.6 million. 



Today the ProInversion UK roadshow comes to an end, after a whirlwind visit to Manchester and London. Executive Director, Javier Illescas arrived early this week in Manchester to meet with several UK companies organized by UKTI Northwest. Among these, were small and medium enterprises from the waste management, software, and other infrastructure related sectors.

The companies may invest $4.5 billion instead of the $5 billion that had been budgeted for the Peruvian gold mine.

Cia. de Minas Buenaventura SAA and partner Newmont Mining Corp. may scale back the amount of money they invest in building the Conga gold project in Peru, a Buenaventura executive said.

The companies may invest $4.5 billion in the project instead of the $5 billion that had been budgeted, Buenaventura Chief Financial Officer Carlos Galvez said today in an interview in Lima.

 

 



Peru's giant Toromocho copper mine is located only 142 kms from Lima at an elevation of 4,600 meters above sea level in the Andes, but when it came time to transport the giant mills and other equipment to the site of the U$ 2 billion project, Toromocho might as well have been the moon. 

 




Education



The Peruvian Ministry of Education announced today that public school students would see their weekly schedules increased from 35 to 45 hours in the classroom.

Andina news agency reports that the increase would be gradually implemented, starting with 1,000 schools. The schedule change is set to take begin early in the year of 2015.



The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) praised Wednesday the ongoing work of the Peruvian government to enhance the state-run nationwide school feeding program Qali Warma.



The Peruvian government reaffirms its pledge to end both childhood chronic undernutrition and anemia in the country by allocating investments for the poorest and most excluded areas, the Andean nation's Prime Minister Rene Cornejo has said.

Culture

Peruvians in the USA



It took five plane changes and 30 hours for 17-year-old Fortuna Calvo-Roth to reach Columbia, Missouri from Lima, Peru.

It was 1952, and Calvo-Roth was determined to study at the Missouri School of Journalism. At the time, it was unusual for women to travel alone, and even more rare for women to pursue college educations. For a 17 year-old to relocate to another continent without knowing anyone was unheard of.

Alianza Lima clinched Peru's new Copa Inca yesterday after winning a dramatic penalty shoot-out against city rivals San Mart�n, securing a place in next year's prestigious Copa Libertadores.

According to several Peruvian news sites, Hugo Quintana Bardelli aka "Negro Hugo" was executed by a group of hit men sent by the Tijuana cartel, the apparent reason behind this was 50,000 USD allegedly stolen by Quintana Bardelli from the Tijuana cartel.
