The Investment bank Goldman Sachs ranked Peru second after South Korea among the main emerging economies with lowest vulnerability to external chocks caused by adjustment processes of international financial conditions.

According to new figures released by the Peruvian Economics Institute shows that Cusco's GDP growth outpaced even China between 2008 and 2013.

According to El Comercio, the study looked at the growth rate of Cusco's real gross domestic product between 2008 and 2013. The study found that Cusco's real GDP increased by 59% over the five-year period, higher than the national real GDP growth rates of China, Panama, and India, among others. 



Less than a quarter of Peruvians are now living in poverty, according to the most recent government data on poverty in the Andean country.  Government statistics agency INEI said that the rate of poverty fell 1.9 percent in 2013 to 23.9 percent from 25.8 percent in 2012. Since 2009, Peru's poverty rate has fallen almost 10 percent, according to the figures. 



Peru's central bank will likely hold monetary policy unchanged in the coming months as the economy is seen growing near its potential and inflation will probably not be driven higher by consumer demand, the bank's president told Reuters on Monday. 



The region must bet on social compacts by promoting development with equality and environmental sustainability, the United Nation's Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) announced Monday. 



The only way for Latin American living standards to rise while the countries improve productivity is if there is enough investment in better technology and equipment.

And that is the other element of the Pacific Alliance plan. Small economies such as Chile or Peru know that on their own they probably don't feature highly in the minds of most international businesses or investors. But by teaming up together as a bloc, they offer a more attractive proposition.

 

 

Mining & Energy


International anti-poverty charity Oxfam will host a working meeting later this week to discuss the effects of mining on the Peruvian economy.

Conference will take place in the Lima district of Miraflores from May 6 to 8.  

 



Australia is looking to Peru for mining opportunities.

A developed mining sector in Chile has opened its doors to Australia's service and trade exports, but now eyes are moving north and Australian business presence in Peru is growing and set to continue.

Following Chile's bi-annual EXPOMIN mining conference in Santiago April 21-25, a delegation of Australian mining equipment, technology, and services (known as METS) companies are now in Peru - many looking to expand their business to the north.  

Infrastructure


Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversi�n extended the deadlines for the consultancy tender for integrated solid hospital waste management in the Lima metropolitan area.

Originally due by end-April, interested firms now have until May 12 to submit technical and economic bids, according to updated tender documents.

Health


The Peruvian government will be spending 500 million soles annually to strengthen basic health services in 170 medical facilities over the next three-year period across all the country's regions. 


Telcomm


Peru's Congress has approved the draft law that strengthens the enforcement powers of the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel). 

This includes agreements such as Telefonica to provide mobile telephony to over 2,200 rural locations and rural satellite internet at over 1,100 localities, in addition to internet to 8,200 public institutions.

Archaeologists say they have found new rock lines in southern Peru that predate the famous and mysterious Nazca Lines, according to a report on the Live Sciencewebsite.

India presently exports textiles worth US$ 55 million to Peru, and this amount could increase by four times by the end of 2015, said deputy director of the Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council of India (SRTEPC) Srijib Roy, at the recently concluded India Business Conference and Exhibition of Textile Industry (INTEXPO Peru 2014), held in the Peruvian capital city of Lima.
