Lowland South America, including the Amazon Basin, harbors most of the last indigenous societies that have limited contact with the outside world. Studying these tribes, located deep within Amazonian rainforests, gives scientists a glimpse at what tribal cultures may have been like before the arrival of Europeans. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri have used satellite images to assess the demographic health of one particular village of isolated people on the border between Brazil and Peru. Remote surveillance is the only method to safely track uncontacted indigenous societies and may offer information that can improve their chances for long-term survival.

A woman has emerged from a life of poverty in Peru to claim she is the world's oldest person - and has the identity card to prove it.

Filomena Taipe Mendoza - who puts her long life down to sheeps' milk and goat meat - claims to be 116 and has lived a hard life in the Andes which saw her widowed at a tender age with nine young children.

She had never left her tiny village, and her secret was only unearthed when she went to pick up a new type of retirement cheque.

Peru's Ministry of Development produced her identity card which says Mrs Mendoza was born on December 20, 1897.

If true, it makes her two-and-a-half months older than the Japanese woman who currently holds the world record.

Mrs Mendoza, who lives in a poverty-stricken village in the remote Huancavelica region, was pictured this week picking up her first cheque as part of a scheme for pensioners in extreme poverty.
