Foreign mining companies in Peru are likely to invest US$ 7 billion annually during the period between 2014 and 2017, the country's Economy and Finance Ministry (MEF) said Friday. 

Economy & Trade


On May 13, the British publication The Economist will host the Peru Summit at the Westin Lima Hotel and Convention Center, according to RPP Noticias. The event will focus on the major political and economic challenges facing Peru today, as well as the country's position in Latin America and international business circles. 



A leading business organization in Peru says the country needs to maintain annual economic growth of at least 5.5 percent in order to lower poverty, according to state news agency Andina.

 Cesar Pe�aranda, the chief economist at the Lima Chamber of Commerce, said that poverty could rise if yearly growth is less than 4 percent.



Peru's net international reserves (NIRs) reached $65.11 billion on April 22,2014, the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) of Peru reported on Saturday. 

The BCP said that the current level of international reserves accounts for over 32 percent of the country's gross domestic product. 

Mining & Energy


Argentine oil company Pluspetrol Norte SA said Sunday that indigenous protesters that had taken over installations at its block 1AB concession in northern Peru have agreed to end their demonstration.

Pluspetrol said in an emailed statement that an indigenous federation representing the protesters agreed to participate in round table discussions organized by the government to address their demands. Pluspetrol said it would also participate in the talks.

Fight Against Drugs


The government of Peru said Friday it is reviewing whether to allow its military to shoot down suspected drug-smuggling aircraft again, just three days after neighboring Bolivia said it would permit its air force to do so.


Technology
 


The Peruvian Government has bought its first (to be owned by Peru) satellite. The 'Asrosat-300' will be the most modern satellite in South America and has cost the country over two hundred million US dollars.

 The satellite, which Peru bought from France, will be used to improve national security and fight drug trafficking and terrorism, as well as to follow meteorological and natural phenomenons, according to news portal Inversi�n y Finanzas. Agriculture


Eight of New York's and New Jersey's finest Peruvian and Pan-Latin restaurants, in partnership with the Trade Commission of Peru in New York, will introduce the Peruvian Quinoa Week as salute to the myriad culinary possibilities of one of the world's most healthful grains.  

Environment


Six environmental advocates from India, Peru, Russia and three other nations have won this year's Goldman Prize, which is awarded annually for grass-roots activism.

Peru's Ruth Buendia was recognized for helping to prevent construction of two large dams that would have displaced nearly 10,000 indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon, the San Francisco-based Goldman Environmental Foundation said Monday.

 




Tourism



The Kuntur Wasi consortium won on Friday the rights to build a new international airport in Peru's southern Andean region of Cusco, the Andean nation's private investment promotion agency or Proinversion, said.  

Gastronomy




The fair organized by PromPeru will have 27 stands and will showcase pisco in a special way.

An estimated 8,000 visitors are expected to attend the Peru, Mucho Gusto fair that is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) through Prom-Peru, and with the support of the Provincial Municipality of Pisco. The fair will take place from May 1 - 3, on the waterfront of Pisco's beach.

Archaeology


Archaeologist Steve Bourget presented findings on campus Saturday from his work in northern Peru and said different civilizations can be connected based on the designs found in medallions and ceramics.

Bourget said he and his team spent a lot of their time at Huaca el Pueblo, where they found a lot of similarities in artifacts to those of the old lord of Sipan, which were uncovered at another site.

Miscellaneous


Terrified young fans were crushed during One Direction's gig in Peru on Sunday night.

The shocking incident left 47 concert-goers suffering various injuries and requiring medical attention.

The boyband stopped performing and warned the crowd they would be forced to walk off stage if they didn't stop pushing forward.



Beatle legend Paul McCartney performed its long-awaited concert at Lima's National Stadium on Friday night to the delight of throngs of Peruvians.

Around 40,000 fans enjoyed from McCartney's huge talent and his two-and-a-half-hour long landmark concert which kicked off at 21:30 local time.  



Peru's Catholic Church said on Thursday condemning the availability of therapeutic abortion in Peru, according to the news publication Terra. Therapeutic abortion is defined as a pregnancy termination that is meant to save the life of the mother.
