After a slight slowdown last year, Peru's economy is rebounding, leading to forecasts that it could be a star performer in Latin America this year.

Peru's government said Tuesday that gross domestic product expanded 5.72% in February, led by strong gains in mining, fishing, banking, and construction.

Peru's economy showed signs of a recovery in February, as the gross domestic product expanded 5.72 percent compared to the year-earlier month.

Growth in February surpassed expectations from economists polled by news agency Reuters, which had expected growth of about 4.9 percent, according to financial daily Gestion.

Mining and Energy

The British-based mining company Hochschild announced today that silver production increased in the first quarter of 2014. Additionally, the company announced they had reduced operating costs for the same quarter.

Peruvian precious metals miner Hochschild Mining (LSE: HOC) has begun construction work at its US$370mn Inmaculada silver project in Peru.

Commissioning is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter at the mine, which will add 7Moz silver equivalent to annual production, Hochschild said in a statement. The company, which drilled an additional 1,925m of tunnels at the mine in the first quarter, said it has completed a workers' camp and a 180km access road and plans a 5,000m exploration program at the deposit this year.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso chaired on Monday at the Government Palace a meeting to discuss the government's work on combating illegal mining and how to increase efforts to eradicate this problem affecting heatlh and environment.

Infrastructure

Peru should develop a five year public-private partnership infrastructure investment plan to show consistency and attract more investment, Gonzalo Prial, president of Peru's association for the promotion of national infrastructure (AFIN), told BNamericas.

The United States has congratulated Peru's government for last week's arrest of at least 24 leaders and members of the Movement for Amnesty and Fundamental Rights (Movadef) for alleged terrorist ties to the Shining Path.

The Embassy of the United States of America announced last week that officials have simplified the process of renewing a B1/B2 or a B2 visa for Peruvian citizens. The process includes faster processing times and a shorter waiting period for applicants who meet all of the requirements.

Climate models generated by researchers at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) of the United Nations show that the phenomenon known as El Nio could return by the middle of this year. Tourism

If you want to get away, but don't have a lot of time, try visiting one of these nearby paradises.

Planning a trip to the Peruvian Amazon? Also known poetically as the "lungs of the world," this unique region has captured the imaginations of travelers for ages. This is partially because of all of the interesting creatures that lurk beneath the leaves and in the river shallows. Here are just a few of the strange species you may have the pleasure (or not!) of meeting on your trip into the jungle.

Gastronomy

Oh, Gastn Acurio. You're a superstar with 32 restaurants in 12 countries, so this probably means little to you, but on behalf of Chicago, please accept our apology. How ready we were to skewer you like an anticucho of beef heart for having the temerity to open an outpost of Tanta here in hopes of educating our city about your beloved Peru, as though you were addressing provincial rubes.

Miscellaneous

Peruvian skywatchers had the chance to witness a rare lunar eclipse on early Tuesday as the moon took a red-colored appearance by reflection of the sun's light.

I grew up with animals and love them. I speak Spanish and have travelled in the developing world. And my housemate's cat, Jack, is sleeping on my bed right now.

And that is just about the extent that I can personally speak to the issue of animal welfare in Peru. But not Natalie Selub.

For the the last three years, Natalie has been living on and off in Mancora, a little beach town in northern Peru. Mancora is a small fishing town, 20 hours (by bus) from the capital Lima. The nearest city is Piura, four hours away.
