State Visit to Canada

Canada's Prime Minister, Stephen Harper has said the meeting he held with the Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso was "very productive".

On his official Twitter page,  Harper posted two messages with pictures in which he comments on his meeting held Thursday with the head of the Peruvian State, at the House of Commons in the Canadian capital Ottawa, as part of his three-day official visit.

Peru and Canada reinforced their cooperation mechanisms of trade promotion and investment following a one-on-one meeting between President Ollanta Humala and the Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday.

The ongoing President Humala's official trip to Canada is set to improve trade of Peruvian textiles to the North American nation, the Canada-Peru Chamber of Commerce said Thursday.

Economy

Peru's massive infrastructure improvements schedule show strong momentum for the usage of public-private partnership (PPP) frameworks in the country, even if it is unlikely to be completed, Fitch Ratings says. According to ProInversion (an advocacy organization for private infrastructure investments in Peru), US$12 billion in projects are in the pipeline for 2014-2015.

After a year of sluggish returns in "sounder" emerging markets across the globe, many investors have been searching for yield in the hope that low prices and potential growth will outweigh risks in some "darker" corners of the planet.

Increasingly, some have become used to the idea that along the Andes mountain range is where future growth lies.
That has some truth, as in the second quarter of this year Peru's economy accelerated 5.6 per cent, Colombia's expanded 4.2 per cent and Chile grew 4.1 per cent.

Mining and Energy

72,819 miners from all regions of Peru have so far applied for formalization. Despite recent protests from informal miners wanting to extend the application deadline, the first phase of the formalization ends April 19. Miners who have applied by this date will then have 120 days to complete the next stage of the process.

Culture

The pre-Inca artifacts will be on display at the National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C. from April 10. Watch the video!

The National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C. has opened an exhibition showcasing the craftsmanship in gold and silver of Peru's pre-Inca civilizations.

The exhibit,  Peruvian Gold: Ancient Treasures Unearthed, is described as a "journey through civilizations from 1250 B.C. to A.D. 1450, learning through the ceremonial gold, silver, ceramics, and textiles created by these sophisticated peoples."

It's not often that an ambassador in Canberra gets a spare moment to spend alone.

So when the Peruvian ambassador, Luis Quesada, found a free hour, he headed straight for the National Gallery of Australia to walk among the treasures of his homeland. It was one of many visits to the Gold and the Incas show that has been running since December, but it was his first solo foray and one of his last before it closes on Easter Monday.

Agriculture

Peruvian exports of blueberries amounted to US$4.5 million in the first quarter of this year (Q1 2014), the CEO of Sierra Exportadora, Alfonso Velasquez, said.

During the virtual launch of the National Berry Directory, he stressed that this was a record considering the cultivation of these fruits had only started six years ago in the South American country.

Peru's capital Lima hosts the 41st meeting of the South American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Control Commission (Cosalfa) aimed at ensuring regional intervention actions for the total eradication of the said illness.

Prevention

The General Body of the Peruvian Volunteer Fire Department has sent a 14 unit order to SpartanERV (Emergency Response Vehicles), a business unit of Spartan Motors, which adds to a 56 unit order secured in October, 2013.

Tourism

Undoubtedly, Easter Week in the city of Ayacucho, located in the south-central Andes, is one of the most famous religious festivities in Peru and this time, this beautiful city expects to attract over 15,000 domestic and foreign tourists.

Peruvian Congressman Aldo Bardález has put forth a bill in Parliament that could increase the penalty to 15 years in prison for crimes against cultural heritage, according to RPP Noticias.

Crimes against cultural heritage are defined as destroying or harming important cultural artifacts, such as defacing important monuments or the theft of archaeological finds. Bardález argued that these crimes have increased in recent years, a total of 5,226 incidences from 2000 to 2013. He also argued that these crimes affect everyone because cultural heritage is owned collectively.

Gastronomy

As per information received from the Vice-president of the Gastronomy Sub-committee of Lima's Chamber of Commerce, 42% of the tourists that arrive to Peru come motivated by its gastronomy, considered among the best in the world.

He also said that studies show that 90% of those visitors are willing to come back to the country, only to taste again the Peruvian flavors.   On other hand, the President of the Gastronomy Committee said that the boom of the Peruvian gastronomy has motivated the opening of more businesses on this sector of the economy.
