Peru's Gross Domestic Product is set to record a 5.5 percent growth rate in 2014, posting the second highest regional growth after Panama, said the World Bank in a report released Wednesday. 

State Visit to Canada


President Ollanta Humala remains in Canada, where he will take opportunities to strengthen ties between both countries, including on issues of business, education and defense.

Humala's visit is centered on an award he is to receive on April 10 from the Canadian Council of the Americas, which voted him Statesman of the Year 2013. 




Grand Challenges Canada, funded by the Government of Canada will give Peru $100,000 seed grant in order to make possible seven innovative projects aimed to address pressing health issues in the Andean country. 

Economy


The Humala government made an excellent policy decision to become one of the founding members of the Pacific Alliance (which includes Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and soon Costa Rica and Panama), a regional political and economic bloc that began in 2011 with the goal of synchronizing and deepening intra-regional trade and enhancing trade and investment with the bloc's dynamic partners in East Asia. 

Mining and Energy


Peru's Milpo, which is controlled by Brazilian industrial group Votorantim, said it planned to restart two small copper mines in Peru and Chile in 2015 and 2016.

Milpo suspended its Chapi project in Peru and Ivan mine in Chile partly because of declining ore grades and rising operating costs. 


Fight Against Terrorism


Peruvian security forces have arrested 24 leaders of the political wing of the Shining Path rebel movement including the lawyer of its imprisoned leader and the cousin of President Ollanta Humala, the president announced Thursday.  

Infrastructure


Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversi�n is set to award the US$658mn Cusco airport concession on April 25, according to the latest tender calendar.

There are currently seven prequalified consortiums, including firms from the US, France, Germany and Korea. However, the names will not be released until the economic and technical bids are presented on April 22.



Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversi�n will award the US$100mn concession of Pisco's San Mart�n port on April 30, according to an updated tender calendar.

Technical and economic bids from prequalified firms are due April 24, with the presentation of the final bid and the awarding of the tender taking place six days later.  

 

Environment


Over US$4bn is needed to clean up and recuperate the water quality of Peru's R�mac river running through Lima region.  



Threatened by the prospects of El Nino, India and Peru have decided for scientific cooperation to understand the effect of weather phenomena, that originates in the Pacific Ocean.  

Diplomacy



The government of Peru is seeking overseas assistance to develop its natural resources and infrastructure.  
Recently, at the Intercontinental Sydney, the Embassy of Peru in Australia hosted a Road Show called "Peru, Endless investment opportunities", with a seminar to showcase the highest profile projects on offer to investors and companies from around the World. ProInversion, the Private Investment Promotion Agency of Peru presented a wide range of business opportunities in sectors such as land transportation, energy and sanitation.
  

 




Tourism

Publishers Marketplace reports that acclaimed Peruvian chef and international restauranteur Gast�n Acurio has landed a deal to publish a cookbook about his native cuisine. Acurio, who owns the highly acclaimed Astrid y Gast�n in Lima (ranked #14 in the world), has published cookbooks before, however this will be his English debut.  

Fashion



Twenty Peruvian designers will display their work at Peru MODA, scheduled to take place in Magdalena, according to the news publication El Economista. The show begins on April 9 and will run until April 11.
