Peru's gross domestic product likely expanded by 5.2% in February compared to the same month a year earlier, the country's Central Reserve Bank (BCR) said on Wednesday.

Mining and Energy

The mining company Buenaventura, one of the largest producers of gold and silver in Peru, plans to sell four small mines where production has halted due to low profitability and conflict with local communities, according to El Comercio.

With prices having slipped back sharply to around $107/tonne plus, the current economics for mining and exporting phosphate is somewhat akin to the economics of iron ore mining. The world's top three mining companies, BHP Billiton, Vale and Rio Tinto, although all diversified miners, have reached their positions through the exploitation of major iron ore projects to supply the world's steel mills. These miners are all still highly profitable with considerable profit margins on this major bulk mined product.

Agriculture

Peru's Olmos irrigation works are 85% complete and are expected to be launched in September of this year.

Water taken from the Huancabamba river will bring irrigation to 43,500ha, including increasing cultivated land by 38,800ha, state news agency Andinas said in a release.

Environment

This morning I heard about the earthquake in Chile and subsequent tsunami warning. Only earlier this week I read the report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which outlines observed climate impacts and the many risks of a warming planet. Both reminded of one of the great tragedies to hit my own country, Peru.

Society

Of issues covered by the Basic Human Needs Dimension, Peru does best in areas including Nutrition and Basic Medical Careand has the greatest opportunity to improve human wellbeing by focusing more on Personal Safety. Of issues covered by the Foundations of Wellbeing Dimension, Peru excels at providing building blocks for people's lives such as Access to Basic Knowledge but would benefit from greater investment in Ecosystem Sustainability. Of issues covered by the Opportunity Dimension, Peru outperforms in providing opportunities for people to improve their position in society and scores highly inPersonal Freedom and Choice yet falls short in Access to Advanced Education.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso said his government has invested more than S/. 40 million (US$ 14.23 million) in social policy, in particular in meeting the needs of the most vulnerable sectors of the Andean country's population.

Diplomacy

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala expressed his sympathy and solidarity to the government and the people of Chile after the neighboring country was hit by a massive earthquake onTuesday.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala will be honoured with the Canadian Council of the Americas (CCA) 's Statesman of the Year Award for 2013 in a special ceremony to be held on April, 10 in Toronto, Canada.

Tourism

Since moving to Lima in January of this year, I had been craving a sunny getaway for obvious reasons (say, seven months of cloud cover). Mncora was my first choice, just two hours south of Ecuador, warm and sunny year round. Not to mention, it's a huge surfing destination.

Gastronomy

There is an unprecedented phenomenon happening in Peru today. Cuisine, something so ordinary in many other countries, has turned into an engine for change. Ferran Adri, the world's most prestigious chef, and Gastn Acurio, Latin America's most influential chef, together embark on a journey to explore the roots of the splendor of Peruvian cuisine and its potential to transform lives. This film is the result of their journey-an exciting testimony of the way in which Peruvian cuisine has found a perfect recipe for spurring social and economic development. Indeed, this is part of a growing movement throughout Latin America, where gastronomy is becoming one of the region's most important assets. Buy tickets clicking on the image.

Fashion

Emporium, the youth fashion brand by Peruvian designer Jorge Luis Salinas, opened the sixth edition of the Latin American glitzy fashion soiree LIFWeek with its latest Autumn/Winter 2014 collection.

Designers are always keen on what's selling, but Tabitha Simmons finds just as much joy in what's already sold. Nothing makes the shoe designer happier than seeing one of her earliest designs on a customer several seasons after the purchase.

"We did a couple of flats", she says. "One is a Peruvian print based on my travels. My husband (fashion photographer Craig McDean) surprised me on our 10th wedding anniversary. I fell in love with Peru. The customs and the traditional dress [were] amazing, and I became very inspired by that. Spring/summer was also based around butterflies, and the fragileness and femininity of them."

Culture

The Ministry of Culture, continuing the publication of information in the Database of Indigenous Peoples (IPDL), has published for the first time information about the Uro ethnic group in Puno.

According to the Ministry's website, the information published contains relevant cultural and ethnic data on the Uro people, as well as their location in reference to the department of Puno, Peruthisweek.comreported

The database is part of the Law on the Right to Prior Consultation with Indigenous People (Law 29785), which gives Peru's indigenous communities the right to be consulted in any case activity or plan that would impact their communities in any way, as well as any activity that would involve their ancestral territories.

The FBI has swooped into an elderly man's Indiana home and seized thousands of artifacts he collected - he says legally - during his decades of travel to hundreds of destinations, including Haiti, Australia, New Guinea and Peru.

Donald Miller, 91, accumulated the artifacts over the past 80 years, said FBI Special Agent Robert Jones, during a news conference.

"The cultural value of these artifacts is immeasurable," Mr. Jones said, at the same time refusing to disclose any details about what the FBI took, Fox News reported.

Miscellaneous

The petition was organized by the collective 'Unin civial ya!' (Civil union now!), led by the Lima Homosexual Movement and other organizations, according to news publication, Publimetro.

"Life (for hetoroxual people) won't change, but it will change for the three million Peruvians who don't fully enjoy their rights," said Ana Araujo, lawyer for the collective.
