A powerful magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off northern Chile on Tuesday night, setting off a small tsunami that forced evacuations along the country's entire Pacific coast. Six people were crushed to death or suffered fatal heart attacks, the interior minister said, but Chile apparently escaped major damage or serious casualties.

Economy


The rate of growth of the Peruvian gross domestic product (GDP) is likely to be around at 5 percent in the first quarter of 2014, Peru's private pension fund association (AAFP) said Monday.

The first quarter' expansion would be fueled by the increasing country's domestic demand and the economic recovery of United States, Japan and some European nations. 



Peru's President Ollanta Humala has said his administration plans to invest 3.2 billion soles (US$ 1,06 billion) in key projects of the northern Lambayeque region raging from road infrastructure to school facilities, it was reported Tuesday. 



Peruvian non-traditional exports increased in February by 11.40 percent from a year earlier, the National Statistics Institute, INEI, said on Monday.

According to the government agency, February's growth was driven by increased shipments from core sectors such as agricultural and livestock, textile, fishing as well as from the chemical and metalworking sub-sectors. 

Mining and Energy


Southern Copper's mining operations in southern Peru continued normally late on Tuesday after a Magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck off northern Chile, a company spokesman said. 

Agriculture


Peru is expected to export 200,000 tons of table grapes in the 2014-2015 campaign with revenues worth nearly US$550 million, according to Fernando Cilloniz, president of the consulting firm Inform@cci�n. 


Emergency Preparedness


Peru's central government is expected to spend 820.8 million soles (US$292.2 million) for disaster risk reduction, a 16 percent increase from a year earlier, Peruvian Economy and Finance Ministry (MEF) reported Monday.  



A volcano in Peru that has not blown its top in four decades spewed more ash skyward on Tuesday, after authorities evacuated villagers to avoid Ubinas's wrath.

The volcano in southwestern Peru blasted back to life causing about 60 villagers from Querapi, near its base, to be relocated on Saturday, Ubinas town mayor Pascual Coaquira said.

  

"We are readying a shelter for refugees from the blasts", he added on Tuesday, noting that the whole Moquegua region was on alert.  



 Authorities in southern Peru handed out masks and protective glasses on Monday after a pickup in activity at the Ubinas Volcano, near Arequipa. Civil Defense provided the safety equipment to residents in Querapi and Ubinas, in the province of General Sanchez Cerro, to protect them against ash from the volcano, daily El Comercio reported.  

 

Fishing


Peru's fishing sector is at risk of being significantly affected by this year's El Nino, fishing expert and oceanic scientist Luis Icochea told Undercurrent News.

The weather phenomenon will particularly hit the anchovy stock and as a result the fishmeal industry, while also affecting giant squid catches for direct human consumption, said Icochea.

The Peruvian capital Lima is set to host the Legislative Presidents' First Meeting of member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) to be held later this year, it has been reported.

According to Publimetro, two architects of different firms have laid down proposals that would convert San Isidro's Golf Club into a centrally located park that would be open to all.

The idea was put forth last week by Juan Manuel del Castillo, a Peruvian architect and urban planner with over 30 years of experience. He first wrote about the idea on his blog, Catarqsis Urbana, in a post published on Sunday 25, where he proposed to convert the Golf Club in the open zonal park called "Todas las Sangres," or "All Races."
