Economy


Peru and Uruguay are the first Latin American countries in line for a possible credit rating hike by Moody's Investors Service, at a moment when sovereign upgrades are expected to become more scarce in the region, a senior analyst with the ratings firm said. As for Peru, currently rated at Baa2, Moody's is optimistic about the country's market-friendly policies and sound fiscal management that have ensured a decade of strong private investment and robust economic growth. 

 



Peruvian exports to India totaled $ 593 million last year, a 53% increase compared with 2012, Peru's Foreign Trade Society (ComexPeru) said on Sunday. 



Textiles and clothing exports from Peru totaled US$ 130 million during the month of January 2014, registering a rise of 2.8 percent, compared to the same month in 2013, as per the Peruvian Ministry of Trade and Tourism (Mincetur). 



Peru's Net International Reserves reached $64.91 billion on March 25,2014, the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) of Peru reported on Saturday. 



A delegation of thirty-two entrepreneurs from the Basque country, an autonomous community of northern Spain will arrive in Lima next week to identify business opportunities, the Peruvian Exporters' Association or ADEX reported.

Chinalco Mining Corp. International, a unit of China's biggest aluminum producer, halted mining at its Toromocho copper project in Peru because of an alleged environmental breach.



Spain's Repsol has started production at its Kinteroni gas field in Cuzco, Peru after nearly two years of delays.

Residents in Peru's capital Lima switched off their lights Saturday evening joining thousands of cities and millions of people around the globe who took part in the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour 2014.

A Peruvian official last week recommended lawmakers in the South American country approve a bill that would allow gays and lesbians to enter into civil unions.

Public Defender Eduardo Vega Luna told Congressman Juan Carlos Eguren Neuenschwander, president of the Commission of Justice and Human Rights in the Peruvian Congress, in a March 26 letter that legislators should approve the measure.

Peruvian Vice Minister of Defense Jakke Valakivi will pay a five-day visit to Finland next week to further strengthen relations between the two countries.

WNEP-TV news anchor Sofia Ojeda says she is "living the American Dream," something she counts as her biggest accomplishment.

From her early years when she came to this country from her native Lima, Peru, with her family, to her swift rise from beat reporter to the weekend anchor chair in just a few months - and then the prime-time co-anchor seat in only about two years in the competitive Northeastern Pennsylvania TV market - Ojeda, 30, has come a long way.

Peru's growing ecconomy makes it an attractive option to international companies looking to expand.
