Peru exported shrimp for US$ 129 million in 2013, a figure that shows an increase of 38.1 percent over 2012, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

Last year, the price of shrimp in the international market recorded its highest rate in the past 11 years: 24.4 percent more than in 2012.

Economy


The growth of emerging economies and the effect this has on world trade flows is closely analysed by economists because of the huge impact on every aspect of the global economy and power balances.

Among the 10 new emerging economies, Peru, the Philippines, Indonesia, Colombia and Sri Lanka, had "strong potential confirmed by a sound business environment," the study said.

Mining & Energy


BPZ Resources is an energy company that is engaged in oil and natural gas exploration and production in Peru, which the company believes, offers excellent opportunity for long term growth.

So far, only a fraction of its properties, just 0.04% of the total gross acreage, has been developed. Therefore, the company has significant room for growth in terms of net proved reserves, production, revenues and income.

 

 



Copper prices, which have dropped for five straight weeks, are slated to continue falling as China's slowing economic growth blunts demand for the metal, Peruvian bank Credicorp Capital said.

Developers, start your engines: Peru's Silicon Wasi is about to kick off once again. Silicon Wasi is a unique competition in which 25 startups from five different countries will go head-to-head in order to determine, quite simply, which is the best product. The winner will be crowned Inca Startup.

Last year's Silicon Wasi featured only startups from Peru and Colombia, but this year, the competition has expanded to include Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico as well.

Member of the Andean Parliament, Hilaria Supa has asked television channel Frecuencia Latina to take TV show 'La paisana Jacinta' off the air.

The TV show has long caused controversy for its portrayal of andean people. Supa says in her statement to the television channel that the TV show is racist and offensive.



For centuries Peruvians have used the mountains to carve out workable farmland. The difficult terrain is just one of many challenges farmers face, and many struggle to grow enough food for their families. But a new programme is helping tens of thousands of people work their way out of poverty. Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports from Cusco on the emerging rural middle class.  

Diplomacy


The governments of Peru and Armenia plan to sign an agreement on mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports.

According to Armenpress, the agreement aims at developing and strengthening friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.  

Emergency preparedness



Geologist Patricio Valderrama warns that Peru's latest tremors are a sign that the next earthquake will be a big one.

There have been more than 50 tremors in Peru over the past few days, something which Peruvian geologist and volcanologist, Valderrama suggests could mean that a big earthquake is on its way.

Valderrama says that there has been a long seismic silence in Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, Lima, and Tacna, with only small tremors taking place for a while.

Peru has been revealed as the home of the world's top-rated luxury hotel, according to a recent analysis by ReviewPro. The five-star Palacio Nazarenas, which is located a stone's throw from Machu Picchu in the city of Cusco, finished top of nearly 900,000 online hotel reviews. 

Gastronomy


Every restaurant has a story, and Surco Peruvian Cuisine's tale is one of humble beginnings-and the strength of family.

Twenty-four-year-old Claudia Dextre is the soft-spoken representative of her family and the east-side eatery they run together. "We're all a team," Dextre says modestly, referring to her parents and two brothers. "I think every member of our family has put forth an effort."

Political violence in Peru's Andean region of Ancash continued, as another candidate for regional president and an anti-corruption prosecutor received death threats.

Newspaper La Republica reported that opposition politician and political candidate for the regional president of Ancash, Juan Calderon, received a funeral flower arrangement. The delivery of the wreath a few feet from his campaign headquarters came a few days after another political opponent of Ancash regional president Cesar Alvarez was gunned down and killed.



Peru's First Vice President Marisol Espinoza Cruz has been immortalized in cartoon form after featuring in the latest episode of The Simpsons.

Marisol Espinoza makes a brief appearance in the long-running animated sitcom in an episode called "The War of Art", which was broadcast on Sunday in the United States.  



A surfer in Peru is turning plastic bottles into surfboards for local youths who can't afford the real thing. Called the ''Life out of Plastic Initiative'', the project aims not only to teach the kids how to surf, but also the importance of eco-awareness.  



Police in Peru have arrested around 60 tourists for taking part in what they described as a wild party.

They seized drugs including marijuana and paste to make cocaine along with bottles of alcohol after complaints from locals.

The majority of the group were Israelis visiting a well known archaeological site near Cusco.
